You point out one good thing that should be constantly hammered home: there's no such thing as a 'big break'. What it really is is lots of really small roles and lots of hard work/schmoozing to end up in a role that makes people sit up and notice. The only way to do that is if you actually have the talent to pull off characters in the first place, and that means experience and training.
