hi everyone! i just had a few questions cause i'm auditioning for a youth theatre musical this weekend.
What is expected of you in the audition?
How good a singer/dancer do you have to be??
What sort of a song are you expected to do for callbacks?
How much should you 'be in charecter' for role that you want to be if there is no dialogue, just 16 bars of a song?
If you can't reach some of the notes should I just sing lower, or try to reach them, even if it sounds wrong?

Thanks for any help you could give me and e-mail me on drama_princess169@hotmail.com or mcstarlet66@hotmail.com

To do as good as you can and show what you're capable of.

Better than whoever is going for the same role, all other things being equal. (Which they never are).

Depends on what/who you're auditioning for. See if you can find out from them. If it's a callback, probably something from the actual show, but maybe not. Probably something that shows your range, versatility and strengths. A song that you perform to the best of your ability, that shows what you're capable of. Or the specific song that you are most likely to be cast to sing.

Depends on the audition. Are they looking for singers; actors; singers who can act; or actors who can sing? The more you can show off what you do well, the better. If you can't do something well, try to show something else that will impress them instead. You want to make them see YOU as the person filling this role, so if it requires singing and being in character, then you've got to give that to them in as many bars as they'll allow you to get through.

How about transposing the key to suit your range? Or if you can sing in tune while improvising down the octave or in a harmony, that may show off your skill and what you're capable of, until it's put into your key. (Trying to reach a note that you can't is probably not at all what they want to hear.)

Cheers,
Craig
(who is going through the same angst right now for a major musical callback...)
