Moderating Posts Down
Wed, 10 Sept 2008, 04:17 pmOkay, I'm a little confused - someone (or several someones) appears to moderating posts down at an alarming rate. I writing of course inr egards to the All Shook Up threads in the reviews forum. It seems now that posts are being moderated down even if they say nice things about the show... Are some people having a moderation war or something?
I can't agree with this kind of blatant and unwarranted censorship! If a post is racist, uses abusive language or any of those things that would warrant moderation I completely understand, but the moderation that is going on is nothing short of juvenile. I'm not sure whether Logos is right in regards to shows that have large numbers of young people involved being a breeding ground for this sort of behaviour, but I think he could make a strong case.
At this stage, I think that everyone needs to have their moderation rights revoked! I for one would be happy to give up the privelage of moderation if it means that this silly consorship will stop. Just because you don't agree with the content of a post does not give you the right to make it disappear. At least, that's what I think. I would love to hear other people's thoughts on this - please, let's start one of the good old fashioned discussions about this - if it turns out I'm in the minority, I'll shut up - I promise!

Moderation
Wed, 10 Sept 2008, 07:51 pmI have done my share of moderation of posts, both up and down, but not in the All Shook Up threads. I like to moderate a post up when I feel it makes a valid or valuable point, or I think it may be of interest to other users.
Similarly, I will vote a post down when it is being used to abuse or personally attack someone. I find that the abusive posts are usually from Walters, and not registered users.
I haven't made a conscious effort to study this, but I tend to agree with Tony's comment about the moderation wars and 'name calling' being more prevalent when the show has a large proportion of young cast. I think the older users maybe have a better grasp of language and how to communicate without stooping to schoolyard bully tactics. There are, however, always exceptions.
The answer may be to have down voted post quarantined, to be reviewed by an editor/administrator before a decision to remove the post is made. This has a couple of inherent problems. It places a huge workload onto Grant and his 4 or 5 editors, and I think goes against the egalitarian way the site operates.
It may also not be possible due to the way the out-of-the-box code for this site works.
The problem Dazza is that if you don't like the content of a post, you DO have the right to make it disappear.
