What does it take?
Sun, 8 Sept 2002, 03:52 pmWhat does it take to get "bums on seats"!! We are running a terrific show featuring an extremely talented cast. We have been featured in the Sunday Times, number 2 in the top 10 to do in Perth after the opera, on Channel 31, 3 community newspapers, even got a mention in The West on Friday and still we cant get full houses - do we have to give tickets away!!!!! Suggestions please - and yes it is posted on this website.

Is it a big name show? If so, could it be that it has already been performed recently? Perth theatre groups often put on shows performed only a year ago or less by another group (or in some instances the same group does a re-run). I do not know if this has much bearing on the box office of the second production but maybe it could be a contributing factor.
If it's a barely known show then, in my experience, all the advertising in the world won't help much. Perth audiences just don't seem to be too keen on trying something new, no matter how good it may be. What me, disillusioned? Well.... yep!
Have you tried 'two-tickets-for-the-price-of-one' or a $10 student rush on your badly booked nights? That sometimes helps. Good luck.

At the moment, the company I am involved in are doing one of the rarer G&S Operettas (Princess Ida). Most of the people we get are through the cast... you just have to get everyone to sell and promote the show as much as possible in any way they can. According to publicity people I've spoken to, mail-outs haven't worked very well and we've done radio ads on a couple of different stations and in newspapers such as MX.
So I guess with a smaller cast, that's a lot harder. What show is it just out of interest?
