A NEW THEATRE FOR MAYLANDS WESTERN AUSTRALIA

In the next few weeks the City of Bayswater will begin demolition of the Alma Venville Centre in Maylands and a new improved community building will be constructed. When construction is finished the Maylands Library, located on the corner of Guildford Rd and Eighth Ave Maylands, will relocate and the hall become vacant. This lovely building has the potential to become a beautiful community theatre venue. The time frame for construction and relocation could be up to 18 months. I have had discussions with the Council and Councillors regarding this proposal. Last night a simple petition I submitted was read before the Mayor and full Council, requesting consideration in making the Maylands Hall available as a Community Theatre. I am currently working with a small group to format a more informative submission to provide details as to the benefits to the community for such a theatre. To assist the council we, as a theatre community, need to show that there is widespread support for a new theatre. I ask for your support, particularly Bayswater residents and ratepayers in contacting councillors and expressing interest in this proposal. I have received exceptional support from Councillor Marlene Robinson who has advised me that any follow up letters she receives will be tabled and read at the Council meetings. To contact your local councillor, log on to the City Of Bayswater website, and a directory of their contact details is available. Alternatively, contact me directly at "chantjim@yahoo.com" Regards, Jim Chantry (Jaguar)

New Theatre for Maylands

It is always an unknown when one posts an item on our theatre page. When I first announced the the closure of the Astor Theatre in Mount Lawley on this page there was a great disapointment and sorrow in the loss of a grand venue and many sub posts, some of us even proposed some sort of monitary assistance. But now we have an opportunity to form a complete new company in a brand new theatre, BUT! we need to convince the council of the need to make it available. I am excited to see the response from the posts listed above as well as other interested parties who have emailed and phoned me directly with offers of support. These replies are from prominent theatre people with a desire to grow the passion for our art, but we need to convince the Bayswater City Council of a need in the community. If you are not a resident or ratepayer and you have family and friends who are, enlist their support to forward a letter or email to their councillor. I am also available for one on one meetings if you have an introduction. Lets raise the curtain Jim.
