A NEW THEATRE FOR MAYLANDS WESTERN AUSTRALIA

In the next few weeks the City of Bayswater will begin demolition of the Alma Venville Centre in Maylands and a new improved community building will be constructed. When construction is finished the Maylands Library, located on the corner of Guildford Rd and Eighth Ave Maylands, will relocate and the hall become vacant. This lovely building has the potential to become a beautiful community theatre venue. The time frame for construction and relocation could be up to 18 months. I have had discussions with the Council and Councillors regarding this proposal. Last night a simple petition I submitted was read before the Mayor and full Council, requesting consideration in making the Maylands Hall available as a Community Theatre. I am currently working with a small group to format a more informative submission to provide details as to the benefits to the community for such a theatre. To assist the council we, as a theatre community, need to show that there is widespread support for a new theatre. I ask for your support, particularly Bayswater residents and ratepayers in contacting councillors and expressing interest in this proposal. I have received exceptional support from Councillor Marlene Robinson who has advised me that any follow up letters she receives will be tabled and read at the Council meetings. To contact your local councillor, log on to the City Of Bayswater website, and a directory of their contact details is available. Alternatively, contact me directly at "chantjim@yahoo.com" Regards, Jim Chantry (Jaguar)

I'll be in it!I was just

I'll be in it!

I was just mentioning this the other day, to Hywel, after reading about the $10 million fed grant in the local rag. As the Bayswater mob has sweet fany adams, in the way of community theatre. It would be ideal if they could incorporate theatre into the complex.

So if I can help in anyway Jim.

Me, too!

I'll do mine tonight - it would be great to have more theatre venues available. :-) L

New Theatre for Maylands

It is always an unknown when one posts an item on our theatre page. When I first announced the the closure of the Astor Theatre in Mount Lawley on this page there was a great disapointment and sorrow in the loss of a grand venue and many sub posts, some of us even proposed some sort of monitary assistance. But now we have an opportunity to form a complete new company in a brand new theatre, BUT! we need to convince the council of the need to make it available. I am excited to see the response from the posts listed above as well as other interested parties who have emailed and phoned me directly with offers of support. These replies are from prominent theatre people with a desire to grow the passion for our art, but we need to convince the Bayswater City Council of a need in the community. If you are not a resident or ratepayer and you have family and friends who are, enlist their support to forward a letter or email to their councillor. I am also available for one on one meetings if you have an introduction. Lets raise the curtain Jim.

Here's my letter

Dear Mayor and Councillors of the City of Bayswater, I have recently become aware of a proposal to create a community theatre space in the current Maylands Library upon its relocation to the new community centre. I am writing to voice my support for this idea, and to ask you to do the same. I am active in community theatre in Perth’s Eastern Metropolitan Region, having been a member and/or audience member of the Darlington Theatre Players, Garrick Theatre in Guildford & KADS in Kalamunda for nearly ten years now. While I appreciate and regularly visit the existing venues, I also realize that a great opportunity has arisen here to create another space for community members to get together to create and enjoy the performing arts. As you no doubt understand, community theatre is a voluntary, not-for-profit endeavour that brings people together for a shared purpose. It serves as an affordable source of recreation and social interaction for people of all ages, abilities and walks of life, and helps to enhance the culture of an area. Transforming the Maylands Library into a performance space would be a great use of the venue, and I therefore urge you to take this opportunity to enhance the cultural character of Maylands and Bayswater in general. Yours faithfully, Lisa Skrypichayko

Maylands theatre

I tried to check out the Maylands Library yesterday, but they are closed from noon saturday untill 8am monday.

The old town hall building [Libary] has a basement & upper floor. I couldn't see the main hall, because of the reflection on the window & being rather short at one end.

My wife grew up in Eight avenue, living oposite the Lyric Picture house & remember the hall well. It aparently it still has a stage, which Tom Snoot [Lyric Cinema owner] also performed in some G&S productions there.

I'll front up the Library on monday & have a sqint about. From the outside, it would be great as a theatre venue. Hoopefully the Art & culture mob, who inhabit the basement. Will move into the new buidin, along with the library?

Great potential!

MAYLANDS UPDATE

I was showing a supporter over the Maylands hall yesterday and formatting a few ideas on how to format the hall when we get the go ahead (think Positive) each time I visit I see more to please me that this will be a very good addition the community theatre network that exists in Perth Suburbs. While there we noticed the security fencing being erected around the Old Venville centre ready for the demolition to start. Early next month We will be holding a get together of interested persons to form an action committee to formulate the campain and advise council as required. Keep this in mind. Jim

Hello Jim,I must applaud

Hello Jim,

I must applaud your initiative on this and wish you all the best of luck with seeing it through to fruition. Maylands, and 8th Avenue in particular, holds a special place in my childhood memories and I'd love to see (and be involved) in a Community Theatre there. I don't really know what I'd be able to do to help in these early stages, but I'd like to help all the same...even if only with moral support.

All the best to you (and to Carol too),

Tim.
