Well, everybody has to

Well, everybody has to start somewhere. I only graduated from film school last year.
I'd have to agree though, a lot of students get extremely hung up over the technical aspect and then neglect everything else, namely the creative/artistic direction. I've seen actors being told to do 'the same, but more' and films get half-finished and then seemingly lost forever by student filmmakers who had no idea what they were doing. It's true that the best way to learn how to do things is on the job, but that isn't to say you can't at least do a bit of research on your own.
My other problem with student filmmakers and most Australian indie filmmakers is the general unwillingness to make anything exciting. As an example, take the cast of this particular film. It doesn't seem that different from the cast in 90% of films put out by AFTRS, SFS, SIFS, tropfest, etc.
