Re: Stage Cigarettes
Whatever you do, don't use the herbal variety.
They may be safer than tobacco but they smell even fouler!
If you can rewrite/reblock around the smoking...

Re: Stage Cigarettes
Here's an idea (totally fake) that I have used successfully several times and people always tell me they think I am really smoking even tho there is no smoke!
I use the outside of a short white pen or texta (cut to approriate length) and over the 'lit' end I stick a cheap old shiny red star (the sort you buy in Woolies for about $1-20 for a pack of 175).
If you lift the cigarette ever so slightly when you 'drag' on it the lights always catch the shiny star and people in the audience swear that it 'lights up'.
It sounds cheap and corny but has worked constantly for me since the late 70's - its tried and true. The only downfall is that the length of it obviously doesn't decrease so its only good in a scene where you either go off quickly or have an excuse to butt it out or drop it and stamp on it!

Re: Stage Cigarettes
Although ...............your theatre may be too close and intimate to the audience to use such a fake idea - I forgot to say that on the end of my last post!
I use this method on raised stages where you do tend to have a fair distance between you and the audience

Re: Stage Cigarettes
Thanks for your responses.
We are using herbal cigies' - have tried two flavours - vanilla and ginseng. To date there have been no negative comments from the audience (and yes it is a very intimate theatre!).
Cheers, Rach

Re: Stage Cigarettes
You can find herbal cigs online at
http://www.honeyrose.co.uk/cgi-bin/shop_protx.pl?category=Honeyrose
but you might want to google honeyrose for a shop near you, maybe check yahoo shops.
Or call local health food stores.
by the way, does anyone know if menthol smells any less gross?
