So...
I must admit that up until last night I had managed to avoid any wholesale exposure to "Rent" (apart from the send up in "Team America")
Primarily for the same reason I have avoided "Miss Saigon" and unsuccessfully avoided "Aida" (which is now one of my faves)

For the most part I enjoyed it...
but, I have one question:
Am I the only person who thought the ending was a cop-out?
For all the talk about it being hard-hitting etc. I thought Puccini had much more guts for actually letting his Mimi die.

What do other people think?
or am I about to be lynched...

PS You should see how bad my seats are for Madam Butterfly
H1-2 Upper Gallery, I do not think there are worse seats at His Maj, apart from the ones behind the pillars
Serves me right for not booking earlier

Re: Rent - the Movie

Paul,
My one criticism of Rent is that Mimi doesn't stay dead -- sad and morbid I know but also, like you mentioned, gutsy.

However I advise anyone who has ONLY seen the movie to get a hold of the OBC recording as I feel the movie, though great, gives the stage show no justice. I'm so glad I went and saw yellow glass's production of Rent last year so that the movie is not my only visual of this kick-ass musical. The stage show is far superior.

So those are my ramblings.

Humph.

The fact that Mimi didn't

The fact that Mimi didn't die in Rent is something that some people had trouble with way back when Larson wrote the original script. Basically his reasoning is this- the whole musical is about life and celebrating the act of living and he felt to have a death at the end...to end on that...sort of 'negative note' would take away from the message he was trying to get across. The message of LIFE. So yeah. Personally, I was never bothered by Mimi's...uhh... non-death but I think the movie could have handled it better-it was abit cheesy. Good to hear you enjoyed it overall. The movie theatres were I live have stopped playing it. Hasn't even been three full weeks yet! But yeah- yay for Rent. And Rent talk!

I didn't even get to see it

I didn't even get to see it at the movies! My boyfriend bought me the DVD from the states and because of limited time I watched it all in about 15minute instalments!!!!! Anyway when the DVD comes out in Australia I strongly reccomend it! There are some good out takes (WHY OH WHY DID THEY CUT 'GOODBYE LOVE'?????!!!!!!) and the documentary on Jonathan Larson is absolutely superb!!! P.S. *WARNING SHAMELESS PLUG* Come and see SEUSSICAL at Playlovers! Opens 21st April, booking through BOCSticketing or visit the Playlovers website www.playlovers.org.

I have to say that not

I have to say that not letting Mimi just die kinda ruined the whole movie for me. Its the emotion that comes with it, I wanted her to die just because it feels right that she should and to have her come back after thinking shes dead ruins the flow of the whole movie. Kudous to all the performers in the movie though, they were fantastic. If only the directing were better this could have been one of my favs, I'm afraid its now left on the cutting room floor for me. i liked it...

i luv rent, the musical.... but the movie will just never be the same. i mean i wasn't complaining at all, seeing most of the original broadway cast doing the movie was great and yes even though it will never beat the stage show i still think it was good. the girl who played mimi....hhmmm, little too annoying singing wise, but she acted the character well. i loved angle!!! my fav character of all, and i lover her..him :) overall, good movie for those who cant see it on stage. xoxo ps..... nice plug bree! love your work!
