Not for long! This morning's Playbill says it closed in NY last night. It only ran about 6 months, making it a flop in NY.

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang didnt flop on the West End it was pretty big over their with Michael Ball in the original cast and Jason Donovan had a stint in it too i think. It was very english - a very west end show that probably didn't transfer well in New York

Re: Chitty Chitty ! ! Coming to Australia?
'Chitty' was definately not a flop! :
'Having been nominated for three Olivier Awards including Best Musical and winning Best Musical in the 2003 Variety Club Awards Chitty then went on to break every record at the London Palladium. The longest running show in the history of the theatre, beating Cameron Mackintosh's production of Oliver and Andrew Lloyd Webber's Joseph and His Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat.'
The show ran for over 2 years and is now on Tour in the UK, as Jerry mentioned it was a very english show which didn't transfer well to broadway which happens quite often. The musicals 'Ragtime' and 'RENT' didn't do well in the UK when they transfered from Broadway, I guess you never can tell what different audiences and countries are going to like!
