BroadwayAustralia.com has learned that one of the world's most successful musicals, Les Miserables, will be produced in Australia again next year.
The new production is to play a strictly limited season in Melbourne. It is not known if the show will tour.
Les Miserables is the story of Jean Valjean, who is released on parole after 19 years on the chain gang. He commits a minor crime and forfeits his parole, leaving him on the run for the rest of his life. Along the way he adopts Cosette, the illegitimate child of factory worker Fantine. The stories of Cosette, her love interest Marius and the always-adorable Eponine make up the crust of the musical.
The show is currently enjoying its 20th year on London's West End, with Australian actor Hayden Tee playing Marius, and enjoyed a remarkable 16 year run on Broadway. It closed after 6,680 performances on May 18, 2003.
Les Miserables was last produced professionally in Australia in 1997, with names such as Rob Guest, Rachael Beck, Delia Hannah, Lara Mulcahy, Scott Irwin, David Campbell, Natalie Jackson Mendoza, Amanda Harrison, Natalie O'Donnell, Helen Walsh, Kane Alexander and Melissa Langton in the cast.
