Re: BAPA

My daughter has just finished first year MT at the Arts Academy (they don't call it BAPA any more!). This year the intake was 34 but it was down to 28 by the end of the year and could be 2-3 less by the time they go back next year.
She had trouble settling in to life in Ballarat.... biggest issue was that home and boyfriend were too close and it was too easy to drive back to Melbourne often! Loved the course and the people but not enough and will be deferring for the time being. Mother is a bit sad, not about shelling out the money for accommodation though!!

Re: BAPA

If my daughter gets in she'll be coming from Adelaide

and no current boyfriend
and she liked the acoomodation (we got a quick tour)

They mentioned 30 and we originally thought it was 15 so anything over is a bonus

Do you know how many callbacks there were in Melbourne when she got in?

Re: BAPA

oh and TRB the accomodation looks pretty safe... are we right?

Re: BAPA

Not sure about how many from Melb....but all the callbacks are in Ballarat, so however many people you saw up there, that's it. She will get a letter in the next week or so, A letter means you are in, a B is a maybe and a C is a no.

Accommodation is very safe, especially at Camp Street. My daughter was a bit further away but it was fine.
Hope your daughter does well....course is great, only thing missing is private singing lessons. The end of year performance was wonderful, but still not enough to convince her to return. Decided she wants to teach...perhaps more sensible in the long run...as far as earning a living that is!!!!

Re: BAPA

Thanks TRB

All good info and that's good news as it improves the odds... there were about 22 in my daughters session so we're guessing no more than 48 call backs

Camp stret sounds ideal... I think it's heaven for her to be over a theatre and dance studio and a stone's throw from shops

She's sitting on an A from Mackay so she's got that to fall back on and they do have private singing lessons... however she's had private lessons for a looong time and that may not be an issue...

However Ballarat would be far cheaper as I can drive her there and easily visit ... not so Mackay... and she's wanted to go to Ballarat for a long time... we only recently found out about Mackay... although Mackay includes breakfast and dinner

I'm virtually certain she'll pick Ballarat if she gets in... everyone was very helpful and friendly

Good luck to your daughter

My wife and I are both teachers and I think we've put my daughter off that one :-)

Re: BAPA

Cayra did your daughter get a callback for BAPA? My friend didnt get into WAAPA this year but got into BAPA at 17yo.

We are from Mt Gambier. She loves it says the course is better structured than WAAPA with more dance elements. Her opinion. And the people are definately more friendlier. The panel was too, they actually watched you. BAPA doesnt undermined you and talk through your audition. They show interest in everyone.

Be interesting to see if the callbacks from Waapa in Adelaide actually get in. Rumour has it they selected the best few from the audition but they didnt come close to the talent from Sydney and Melbourne.

It wouldn't surprise me again if no one from Adelaide gets into the course.

Re: BAPA

Yes she did... when we looked at the accomodation and said we were from Adelaide they lady showing us round said "we have two girls from Mt Gambier here this year"... so I guess one is your daughter

Adelaide doesn't seem to have a great record with WAAPA. I have heard all sorts of rumours about why but hope none of them are true
All kudos to them for coming to Adelaide. I'm sure the pool of talent is Adelaide is much smaller than Sydney and Melbourne but from my experience it's on a par

From what we heard 17 is just too young for WAAPA and as my girl is 4 foot 11... she looks even younger than 17... (hey it works for Kristin Chenowith) and if she does a three year course she'll still be only 20

If she gets into Ballarat she'll be thrilled... general consensus seems to be the course is as good but doesn't have the name yet and carry the 'weight' within the industry

Re: BAPA

Your remark about BAPA in respect of not having a name in the industry yet is somewhat true, but more recent graduates have been cast members of Annie, My Fair Lady, We Will Rock You and Mamma Mia just to name a few, all within one year of graduating from their course!
Other graduates have been working on cruise ships, starting their own companies and working at Tokyo Disney or touring with The Wiggles.

Graduates from the Production course (which no longer exists in Ballarat after 2005) have worked on We Will Rock You, Dirty Dancing, The Lion King and more, so the name is out there, perhaps not so much in the performance side as production though.

Re: BAPA

Apologies if my remark came over that way Tanje

Our research led us to the points that you have just stated

What I was trying to say is that WAAPA is often the institution people think of first because it established a name sooner

Re: BAPA

Yes WAAPA and NIDA grads get a majority of the work.

Friend has just returned from Brent Street and didnt complete the course. The professionals at Brents Street aren't scoring any jobs so how are you to get work after you graduate. However, his may change now that the ownership has changed- maybe a new direction

CODA do have a few students doing stuff and seems to have excellent educators with some assistance from celebs as well. Although this course has not been around long I feels its going to be 'up there in the future".

When does your daughter find out about BAPA, keep us posted and will keep my fingers crossed.

Re: BAPA

Just in regards to Cayra about Adelaide receiving entrants into Waapa.
I am from Adelaide and graduated from the BA in 2000. In my year there were two others who also were from Adelaide, plus many at the callbacks who gained entry into the Certificate course. So I am led to believe that if there is the talent at that years auditions, then no matter what city they are from, people will be accpeted.
We also all auditioned in Adelaide, plus were all males, if that is of any interest!
Also whilst i was studying, each 1st year had Adelaide people in it.
BTW - I have many friends who have graduated or are in the middle of their BAPA course, and the standard of performers is excellent and they all seem to love the course.
Good Luck to all who are still waiting to hear if they have been accepted or not, and i hope to sing and dance with you all in a show soon!

Re: BAPA

just a quick note, (current Waapa 3rd year) We have a girl in our year from SA, and she is amazing, it never has anything to do with where your from!! Also speaking to a BAPA 3rd year do u guys stop dance classes in 3rd year? or is that just ballet you dont do? At Waapa u dance all 3 years ( jazz, tap and ballet) . We prob dance more then we sing!
