professional auditions

I'd like to do some professional music theatre. Is it true that professional auditions are open and an agent isn't required? Where can I find audition listings? Any info you could give me would be greatly appreciated! I've done a lot of amateur theatre but am new at the 'professional' thing!

An agent may not be required, but it is a good idea. Check out MEAA (the union, www.alliance.org.au) for a list, as well as some general advice.

The best thing you can do is keep your eyes peeled for jobs, go to classes, and chat to everyone you know. You can also approach local theatre companies and do some work experience (while you may only be doing admin stuff, it's a good way to learn people's names, and get on their mailing list for when they do have some auditions going).

It's also a good idea to check out the fringe/co-op scene (but keep your wits about you, because this area is a little more grey in terms of payment), where you can meet a lot of similar minded people.

There are some websites that advertise paid jobs (Arts Hub is the best), and you should try checking those at least once a week.
