Re: Sondheim songs
Unless the director/audition requirement is asking *specifically* for 2 sondheim songs, I would stay well away. They are notoriously difficult to pull off in an audition setting (unless you are particularly well trained, musically).
However, if you must sing 2 Sondheim songs, you may wish to tell us a bit more about your vocal type, style and the show/course you are auditioning for.
Sincerely,
Jason S.

Re: Sondheim songs
Look at musicals like;
Into the Woods
A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum
Sweeny Todd Demon Barber on Fleet Street
That should give you some help and some variety.
Give the songs to your vocal coach so he/she can help you
Chooka's!

Re: Sondheim songs
Sondheim is to musical theatre what Mahler is to 20th century composition. genius; but one you toy with at your peril.
I concur with Jason. DON'T use a Sondheim piece for an audition unless requested, or well-trained in music. Even if you think you can pull it off in front of your singing teacher, auditions are different; more nerve-wracking, etc. And Sondheim's music does not suffer @!#$-ups. At all.

Re: Sondheim songs
Having just sat through auditions as director where the musical director had asked for this same thing I would suggest that looking at a contrast in styles such as Wicked vs Into the Woods for example. Some thing like Im Unworthy done well can show off a vocal range assuming this is suitable.
Not sure if this helps at all but im new to this :)

Umm - Wicked is not Sondheim - it's Schwartz!
