I was thinking if anyone can suggest any cool stuff for waapa auditions? i was thinking something more modern..cause all of the new dance mix musicals (let us rock you and saturday fever) have pop stuff in them.
maybe something by the fugees or cold chisel? killing me softly or choir girl? will they like that ?
or should i stick to anthem and this is the moment?>
thanks,
seb

Re: WAAPA auditions

Well, i saw some of the waapa shows this year, and they didn't really do any of the new pop musical stuff. actually, they did a really great one called crazy for you! (awww so sweet). and a funny thing happened on the way to the forum. (oh, the guy that played the lead in that was so funny. so was the old guy.)
the closest thing to pop stuff was chess.... and even then , it wasn't of cold chisel calibre!
but don't do anthem, cause it's from chess, and they only just did it.
hope this is helpful

Re: WAAPA auditions

Hi Seb. I think that it would be appreciate the new material. these people see alot of auditioners and they might like a change in what they see. I'm also auditioning. I got a call back last year and i did the Footloose song. I also did my own choreography the blonde lady on the panel seemed to like it. but remember to find something challenging. something they'll never forget. good luck seb. I might even see you there.
Walter PlingeThu, 22 Sept 2005, 05:50 pm

Re: WAAPA auditions

uncle cam... that blonde lady is jenny lynnd. she's the dance lady. just so you know for the next audition. did you see any of the shows from wappa this year?

Re: WAAPA auditions

Glinda I'm doing Anthem. My second choice instead of that is the pirate king song. Am i shooting myself in the foot by doing anthem. could you let me know asap cause i need to get my pirate costume back from my friend. ta
Walter PlingeThu, 22 Sept 2005, 05:53 pm

Re: WAAPA auditions

I hope that was a joke.
that's all i have to say. pirate king is great, but lose the costume. particularly if you have to change in between songs. i mean, you don't want to sing both songs looking like a loser?
Walter PlingeSat, 24 Sept 2005, 04:30 pm

Re: WAAPA auditions

Songs by them is NOT Musical Theatre. Not to be rude or anything, but when you audition for WAAPA, you need to pick something thats of the Musical Theatre GENRE. It's not what YOU want to hear, at the end of the day really. It should be a thrilling song/s that will show off your vocal quality.

You'd be making a bad choice if you did something from We Will Rock You or something like that. You need to chose a classic from Sondheim or, Gershwin, Berlin, Porter etc etc.

Good Luck.
Walter PlingeMon, 26 Sept 2005, 02:34 pm

Re: WAAPA auditions

I beg to differ, waapa hopeful1.
music theatre is a fluid, ever changing genre. if someone wants to sing a more rocked up song for an audition, that's their perogative. if you sing it well, the panel will like you no matter what. there's no point singing some sondheim badly if you can do other stuff better. that's why you go to a course like waapa. to learn how to do deal with sondheim and gershwin and porter and rodgers and hart. you know?
jesus christ! are you guys all just sour and bitter cause you've never been to waapa??
Walter PlingeTue, 27 Sept 2005, 10:44 am

Re: WAAPA auditions

Sorry Glinda,

but i agree with waapa hopeful. The question of catalogue musicals (We Will Rock You, Mumma Mia etc) came up in an audition masterclass and Mr. King said point blank that songs from those kind of musicals aren't the best for auditions for WAAPA.

Having said that though - i do agree that you shouldn't go and sing sondheim just cos it's sondheim.

Goodluck to all those auditioning.

Re: WAAPA auditions

Glinda, I know that some disagree with your unique point of view so i would really value your input, or anyone elses, as to whether or not I should sing a song that is originally intended for a girl. My choices are HELLO DOLLY or POPULAR from Wicked. I know that it might sound silly but i do both of them really really well. The other song is WHERE IS LOVE from Oliver. what do you think?
Walter PlingeTue, 27 Sept 2005, 03:27 pm

Re: WAAPA auditions

melly,
i think you misunderstand me. i never said that we will rock you songs or any of these 'mega mix musical' songs are the "best" choices for auditions. but if you sing them well, 'mr king' and his following are going to like you regardless. that's the same for any audition piece. usually the songs that are in these shows don't translate well to piano anyway, so what's the use? but if it's absolutely amazing, they aren't going to turn you away based on material!
Walter PlingeTue, 27 Sept 2005, 03:35 pm

Re: WAAPA auditions

Ha!
you want my opinion BECAUSE people disagree?
ok. i'm assuming you're a male...with a broken voice...
look i think you could probably answer this question yourself. if you're really unsure, sing them all for some people and see what they think.
or are you just looking for attention? looking for someone to write something funny back to you? do you want people to think you are serious about this?
sorry if my bluntness is to harsh for you.
i'd aviod hello dolly and where is love. popular would probably be hilarious as a cross gender reading, but maybe save that for when you're in the course.
although, in saying that, i've heard they don't like people straying too far from the square in performance pracs... not that i agree with this totally. if you can't experiment at a learning institution, where can you??

Re: WAAPA auditions

All interesting thoughts

Someone close to me is auditioning soon

My advice to her (for what it's worth) is do what you do well and what works for you

I'm wouldn't agree with some of the choices here but that's just my opinion

I would listen carefully to what has been said at the masterclasses as it's straight from the horse's mouth but

The paradox is you never really know if it was the song or the performance on the day that got the end result.... best to go with what your instict tells you... take too much advice you may wish you hadn't

(the loneliest words you'll ever hear.......etc)

Re: WAAPA auditions

Glinda - I didn't mean what I said in a rude way, im sorry if it came out that way. It's just my opinion. Of course they can sing something like that if they feel that they can make it their own and make it sound good. If they can do that then sure, why not sing something like a rock song. But i just feel that musical theatre is always going to be what it has been for generations, and i wouldn't like it to evolve into a rock infested medium, thats all.
Walter PlingeWed, 28 Sept 2005, 09:16 am

Re: WAAPA auditions

WHATEVER YOU DO...........DO NOT SING A SONG FROM WICKED. So many aplicants are using pieces from Wicked its just not funny. Please take this advise ad choose something different. Remember, that what you pick, the panel may have already heard 5 thousand times that day. Good luck on your choice.
Walter PlingeWed, 28 Sept 2005, 11:52 am

Re: WAAPA auditions

fair enough too...i wouldn't want it to be rock-infested either! (and i appreiciate your opinion. and i didn't think you were being rude)
but, let's face it, it's going to be rock-influenced at the very least.
the music theatre of 'ago' came during a period that srpung out of operetta and G&S style song writing.
now, we have so many other styles of music to draw on, and thus the genre is able to widen considerably while still fitting into the old perameters. while ever there is storytelling and characters and messages to get across to an audience, music theatre will never be a rock infested genre. but by god, it will be a jazz, blues, rock, pop, classical, art song, lieder, operetta, soul, social, theatrically influenced one!
and thank god for that too!
Walter PlingeWed, 28 Sept 2005, 12:03 pm

Re: WAAPA auditions

GLinda how can you tolerate the kind of crap that these rock musicals keep producing. Firstly the book to Chess is so bad i wouldn't wipe my ass with it cause there's so many holes in the script i wouldn't want to get @!#$ on myself. Mama Mia was CRAP. Rocky Horror was CRAP. We will rock you should be called We will CRAP on you you. And don't even get me started on the Rod Stewart musical. I don't mean to sound rude but it's just my opinion.

Yes it does. As a matter of fact, you don't need to do the course, as you have virtually graduated and you should just automatically be given a job.

My question is: I have recently given First Aid to several people who were bleeding (strictly amateur, but judged highly for my efforts). I was wondering if I can now get into Med School without having to apply?

Cheers,
Craig

Re: WAAPA auditions - Yes, consider yourself graduated!

Hi All,

With all this conversation going on i thought i would post something you all may find of interest......
I auditioned for WAAPA when i was 20 and had no clue really as to what was going on in Musical Theatre.
I auditioned with two songs from Les Mis (Empty Chairs and At the end of the day - which is a full ensemble number!!!) AND i got in!
So to say be careful about song choice etc etc is correct but, if you sing something well and they like you, it won't really matter when it comes to waapa making their decisions.
BTW - Most people who were in my graduating class, also had equally as bad audition songs and still made it into the course. I guess the thing is talent will most probably win over all.
Hope this helps you all, and chookas for your auditions.

Re: WAAPA auditions

i know who you mean... i'll have to check that out for you, manwell. but beware, this type of question could get scathing remarks from those on this forum who believe they run the show.
i heard he was dating a girl who graduated last year.
Walter PlingeThu, 29 Sept 2005, 05:13 pm

Re: WAAPA auditions

No I swear he was dating that guy in third year, you know, the one who played Molokov....

Re: WAAPA auditions

Glinda,

Settle Kitten!!

Just throwing an idea in there. People are just trying to be helpful you know - they are not just writing things for the sole purpose of disagreeing with you. (is that even how you spell disagreeing?)

again, goodluck to anyone who is auditioning this year.
Walter PlingeSun, 2 Oct 2005, 09:47 pm

Re: WAAPA auditions

Didn't two of the girls that got in this year sing popular from Wicked??

Personally I don't think it matters what song you sing for your audition as long as it flatters you, you tell the story and you have fun with it. The "panel" will enjoy your performance if you enjoy yourself...
As for the masterclass...take every word as gospel because they are the ones letting you in....what you do after that is up to you.
And as for the personal lives of the people in the course...you sort of sound stalkerish talking about them on a public forum....!

Goodluck guys!!
