Young Australian talent to unite in ‘SONGS’

A multi-talented troupe of 25 Victorian artists will take to the stage this September in a unique new production of an Off-Broadway smash.

Melbourne based performing arts company Devanesen Productions is presenting Tony award winning composer Jason Robert Brown’s celebrated music theatre song-cycle ‘SONGS FOR A NEW WORLD’ for an exclusive, limited season at Gasworks Theatre.

It’s been a decade since ‘SONGS’ – which transports the audience from the deck of a 1492 Spanish sailing ship to a ledge 57 stories above Fifth Avenue, to the harsh reality of the city streets, and beyond – enjoyed its original New York engagement. Since then the show has enjoyed more than 300 productions worldwide – including a sell out smash at the 2003 Adelaide Cabaret Festival. But this latest Melbourne incarnation is something altogether different.

Usually presented with a small, revue style cast, Devanesen Productions’ ‘SONGS’ will be performed by an powerful ensemble of 25, handpicked, young Victorian artists – letting this acclaimed work soar to new heights.

The cast bring to life a diverse array of vibrant characters – stories and characters of today, the ‘songs for a new world.’

Says Brown of the gripping revue: “It’s about hitting the wall and having to make a choice, or take a stand, or turn around and go back.”
