AUSTRALIAN PREMIERE OF THE TONY AWARD-WINNING BROADWAY MUSICAL ‘RAGTIME’

On Saturday 3 September MonUCS (The Monash University Choral Society) will be performing the Australian Premiere of the Broadway musical RAGTIME in a concert performance at Ivanhoe Girls' Grammar School, 123 Marshall Street Ivanhoe, conducted by Trevor Jones.

Tickets are available through Monash Arts (9905 1111) at $22 concession and $28 adult, with a surcharge for credit card purchases. Depending on demand, a matinee performance on Sunday September 4th may be announced closer to the concert date.

RAGTIME debuted on Broadway in 1998, and won four Tony Awards (Best Featured Actress, Book, Score and Orchestration).

The story is set in early 20th century America, and follows the lives of an immigrant and his motherless daughter, a wealthy family, a black man (Coalhouse Walker), and his lover (Sarah), as the stories intertwine to produce a powerful and moving story of love, loss, oppression and industry, with a comic twist.

Adapted from the book by Terrence McNally, with music by Stephen Flaherty and lyrics by Lynn Ahrens and based on E. L. DoctorowÂ’s distinguished novel, the musical merits of RAGTIME are undeniable.

MonUCS is a wholly student run Choir formed in 1962, is a part of AICSA (Australian Intervarsity Choral Societies Association) and performs a variety of works ranging from Mozart to Gilbert and Sullivan.

By arrangement with Hal Leonard Australia Pty Ltd Exclusive agent for Music Theatre International (NY)

Re: Ragtime - Australian Premiere- Concert version @ $28!?

I would love to see this one but
a Concert version @ $28!?
Does anyone else think this is a little over the top?

How much would it be for the full presentation?
how technical is this one?

Just my thoughts-
Anyone else think the same or different?
What is rights story for a concert version? Is it less or more or the same- plus there are so many that can not be done concert wise...

Been hearing murmurs from Hal Leonard that they are clamping down "concert" versions and all.

We are doing Les Miz sortly and we needed to ask permision for a fundrasier to perform one day more at a concert- we got word back that we could do it just - and ONLY with piano.

Re: Ragtime - Australian Premiere- Concert version @ $28!?

No, I am not in the show, but a friend of mine is and passed all the details on to me. The show is being put on by the Monash Choral Society, who are obviously and amateur group. The choir will be singing the ensemble parts, while the lead roles were cast outside of the choir. I assume that since the lead roles rehearsed with the choir for the first time this weekend (2 weeks before opening) that they are professional musical theatre performers.

I am only speaking for myself when I say that I will gladly pay $28 for the first opportunity to see Ragtime in Australia. It is one of my favourite musicals of all time, and is unlikely to get a full production any time soon given the large scale of the production and the casting limitations of needing a black and white cast (this particular production has been very loose in its definition of black and white - I am hoping they can get away with it because it is a concert version).

From what I hear the production is just awesome. And since there will be one performance only, you won't have the luxury of waiting to see a review before deciding to spend you $28 bucks!

Re: Ragtime - Australian Premiere

It was amazing!!!!! It's such a shame that it wasn't a fully staged production, as the leads where all fantastic and the chorus singing energetic and polished. I do agree that $28 is a little steep for a concert version, however I did not at all feel cheated out of my money. It was great to hear someone other than the original Broadway cast singing those brilliant songs.

Re: Ragtime - Australian Premiere

Any chance of a review? I couldn't make it to the show and was disappointed like many that it was only a 1 off performance. I also heard that the soloist were very good and would love to find out more about who played who and how well! Thanks!!!
