rock around the clock
Sat, 2 July 2005, 11:37 pmSo...
Rock Around the Clock begins this week... What have people heard about this play so far???
From what i have heard, word on the street is that it is not going to be good...
Yet the play is almost booked out??? Does this make sense?
I think it makes sense... Everyone wants to go to Marloo Theatre to see for themselves just how bad a musical can be...
What have other people heard about Marloo's production of "Rock Around the Clock"???

Re: rock around & judge for yourself!
Well, here's a timely advertisement for get in quick, while seats are still available... I suppose a good scandal can provoke extra ticket sales, however The Starter's theory, despite being a generous plug for the show, seems a little premature, considering that no one has had a chance to see the production as yet.
Yes, I am affiliated with the theatre & this production - however!
The Darlington Theatre Players have been around for a long time (50 years this season & 20 years at Marloo), so they do have a loyal following. Add to this the fact that Rock Around the Clock is quite a big production, with a sizeable cast, all of whom have friends & family who enjoy supporting local theatre. Given the limited size of the theatre (it seats 100 bums) & the fact that this show is locally written & based on a very popular era for music and dance, I'm not surprised that seats are selling as quickly as they are.
I don't expect the author's intention in writing Rock Around the Clock was that it be deemed to be "Great Art". It is intended as entertainment - a light, lively play with music - plus great dance numbers as well. Marloo is earning a reputation as an excellent venue for young people to learn about all types of theatre & have a go - and this our an opportunity to support the next generation of performers & see the potential that is out there.
If you would like to come & make up your own mind, please ring Gwyne on 9255 1783 to see what seats are left - I'm sure you'll have an entertaining evening & leave with a smile on your dial.

Re: rock around the clock
To 'The Starter whoever you are. A lot of people have been working extremely hard both on and off stage over the last several weeks. Your comments are made out of ignorance. ie: Have you been attending rehearsals? Have you seen the play? Do you know anyone who attended our opening night yesterday? Have the people on "the street" who made these supposed comments had anything to do with the production?
Yes, we are booked out and Lisa is quite right in her comments that the play is extremely light hearted, a lot of fun and incoporates music of the era.
Judging by our 'full house' last night we acheived what we set out to do. Our audiences clapped, cheered, joined in the fun and went home singing and laughing. I am extremely proud of my lovely cast and hard working crew. Laverne

Re: rock around the clock
Everything I have seen Laverne attempt at Marloo has been carried out enthusiastically and professionally.
My son was in one of her productions a couple of years ago...and if Rock is a quarter as good and as well produced it will be a great night out!
No I am not associated with or a friend of anyone at Marloo except as audience ..But long live their productions...even tho i am unable to get to this one!

Re: rock around the clock
Do i detect a hint (or maybe more than just a hint) of jealousy from "The Starter"? Could it be that they wished they were in a production like Rock Around the Clock, maybe even having tried to get in, and couldnt.
I also agree with Lisa, thanks for helping promote the show.

Re: rock around the clock
We are associated with this production, through our grandson dancing in it, and I take a real exception to your comments, it is quite obvious you have not seen the end result, if you had you would see a whole show full of fun, great music, dancing, acting and costumes.
The response from last nights audience was tremendous, we know of people who are trying to get tickets to another performance because they enjoyed the show so much, If it were possible my husband & I would be at every performance, it is thoroughly entertaining.
The time and effort these people have put into this show is a credit to them all, and for 'Starter' to criticise something he, she or it has not seen is pretty despicable in my opinion.

Re: rock around the clock
All I can say is that the "Starter" is a coward who dares not even use his or own name.
Starter, whoever you are, I don't know where you got your "information" that it was an unworthy production. You obviousy have a tiny mind if this is all you can spend your time doing.
I have not been involved much up until now with this production but I am extremely proud of my wife and the effort she is given by ALL of the cast members.
Don't you think that if it was "a load of rubbish" that
a) The committee would pull the show and
b) The cast would leave in droves.
This forum should not be a slanging match and you obviously have it "IN" for LaVerne.
Let's stop this subject right now.

Re: rock around the clock
The way the Starter looks at things, Rock Around the Clock must be really bad. The whole season has been sold out, with over 50 people on the waiting list for cancellations.
