West Side Story
Thu, 19 May 2005, 08:48 amHi everyone,
I have a big audition coming up for a production of West Side Story. I really want the lead and know that I am capable of it if I put in a good auditon.
My question is, does anyone know a few songs that I would be worth be learning in the style of the show and particular the character of Tony.
Thanks guys and girls
M.

Re: West Side Story
Hi,
There is a superstition about avoiding Sondheim songs for auditions, but in the case of WSS, I think it could actually help separate you from the crowd, since the music is quite difficult anyway - esp some of Tony's stuff!
My first instinct was to suggest "Joanna" from Sweeny Todd... I think it has a similar feel to much of Tony's music.
Other songs you might try are "Happily Ever After" from Marry Me a Little and "Gethsemane" from Jesus Christ Superstar.
Hope that helps...
Jason

Re: West Side Story
Hi,
Think more classical musical theatre repertoire, stick to soundeim and probably can't go wrong. 'Being Alive' from Company. Remember Tony is a tenor, up to B flat, so showing off that top range is essential. Johanna from Sweeney Todd is in more a lyric baritone range. 'Giants in the sky' from Into the Woods is also good.
Good Luck
