Re: whats the point in asking?

That's right! No one does care. About time one of you young folk realised this.

Now, if only more of the tweens who clog this board wiv dreems 2 bcome faymoos gave up before before posting here....

Re: whats the point in asking?

Oh that's absolute rubbish!

People do care, they just get tired of answering the same questions over and over...that and people don't have time to answer all the questions.

And if you don't care, then maybe you need to learn to care. Because I'm sure someone out there has helped you at some point or another. Be grateful they took the time to help you, and do the same for others. Otherwise theatre really will die out.

As for you Tegan, don't give up hope, and don't stop trying. The problem is that this site is very limited in helping young people into real, professional work. You need a lot of courage, research and information to work in the theatre, and this site is just one of many ways to find that information. Keep digging, find some more websites, read newspapers, go to classes, talk to your elder theatre people (friends, family, teachers, etc.) and don't pay attention to people who say that nobody cares.

A few of us do.

Re: whats the point in asking?

Hmm. I'm sure I've endured countless posts from you, Na, whingeing about the endless deluge of pointless posts from youngsters wanting to be a 'star'. This is just a variation of a theme. If she's disillusioned with acting at the ripe old age of 12, then she doesn't stand a chance.
Besides, Tegan only stated a fact. She said that no one cared about the millions of inept posts from all the children wanting to be famous and cast in feature length films. At least I think that's what she was trying to say. If so, then she's right. Generally, no one except for creepy people will directly respond to such a post.
It annoys me as much as this do-good email from you did.

Re: whats the point in asking?

So sorry that I offended you. At least I got a response.

Better than none at all.

Youth Theatre... there is hope!

Tegan ... what you say in some respects is true. The number of people that do actually sit up and take notice of the young people who post here could probably be counted on one hand....(aside from the "creepies" that Na described)... but this is because of the sheer amount of such posts that these boards recieve.....and believe me, getting the same message twenty times a day tends to grate on the nerves a bit.
However, there ARE theatre companies that welcome young people.
Stirling Players (S.P.Y.), Innaloo is one that comes immediately to mind and Ros Boyer's training group, (JETS) in Joondalup is another. Both these are organised by reputable people and (in the case of Stirling Players) mount at least one "youth" production each year. If you wish to check out the oppurtunities available for either of them contact the following people.
For S.P.Y. (Stirling Players Youth) Carryn Maddocks on 9448-2059 or for J.E.T.S. Ros Boyer on 9405-07987 or 0413-595-189.
(I also have it on good authority that Stirling Players will soon be auditioning for young actors to take part in a section of their one-act play season. Contact Christine Ellis on 9402-4675 for further information about this.)

Re: Youth Theatre... there is hope!

There is also the West Australian Youth Theatre Company which is run by the fantastic Jenny Davis. Contact Leonie on 9226 2144.

Also The Midnite Youth Theatre Company based in Claremont. Call Matt on 9442 1584.

Re: Youth Theatre... there is hope!

In regard to youth theatre, does anyone know of good drama schools/courses for people under the age of 14? (In Perth or Mandurah)
I am asking on behalf of someone who has ten year old children who are looking for short night courses and such..

Re: Youth Theatre... there is hope!

Wow, now if the King of Devil Town bothers to read this post, they will note that people care enough to respond and give advice.

So, I'm not the only do-gooder out there.

For your information, I have my own theatre company, I work part-time for Arts Hub, and I run a free newsletter for theatre people (soon to become a proper zine). The only reason I post encouraging messages is because I found/find it really difficult to make the transition from emerging artist/student to professional.

It is only through luck and perserverance that I have done these things, and have a large amount of experience because I refused to believe anyone when they said it was too hard to work in the industry.

I am well-liked among my colleagues and friends simply because I make the effort to help, and this in turn gets me work.

The people that I have worked with over the years that I have liked working for/with the most, are those people who took the time to teach me little things. From just learning how to fade up a light using a computer program, to teaching me how to make things, and so forth, I have gained a lot of valuable knowledge, that I would never get in a class, course or on my own.

One of the reasons this industry is 'dying out', is because nobody has the time to teach each other anything, and the knowledge never gets passed on to the next generation.

Tegan, there are heaps of theatres that not only run classes for young people, but plenty of theatres focussed on producing shows by young people. Try the ATYP, Australian Theatre for Young People, who I believe have companies listed on their website that involve activities for young people.

Yeah, I bothered to read it. The stinking thing gets sent
to my inbox, doesn't it? Like all the other infuriating and
pointless messages posted by 12 year olds wanting to be
famous. Which was my initial gripe. Not whatever little
crusade it is you've decided to bang on about this time.

Hey, more power to you. If you want to waste time replying
to such a well expressed, earnest request for information.
If that's what 'tegan' was even after. She didn't even
bother to mention what state, or country, she was in.

Bravo. Just like everyone else visiting this site, I also
run a theatre company and done a whole bunch of stuff over the years in the arts (and even been paid for it), so thanks for the low-down on your CV, for whatever worth you felt it had in mentioning it.

hmmm.... any other reasons?

I'm really glad for you. I am. You followed your dream.
That's great.

Hopefully you're also good at what you do. That tends to go
a long way.

That's fantastic.

Not true. There's really a great deal of interest from very
talented people wanting to practice the arts and many
worthy institutions that teach the requisite skills. This is a
whole completely different argument and I think you'll find
your assertion (rightly or wrongly) stems from the number
of people attending the performing arts, not from someone
who couldn't be arsed showing someone how to dim lights.

I don't reckon it could've been that hard for the mite to
find that out herself, if she wanted. Hell, even if she had
asked...
