Thrill Me : The Leopold and Loeb Story

“Thrill Me” the musical about the real life Leopold and Loeb murder case has its Australian premiere in a show directed by Martin Croft at Theatreworks, St. Kilda from April 13th to 23rd.

The show tells the story of Leopold and Loeb, the thrill killers of 14-year-old Bobby Franks. This shocking story while having been told before in films such as “Compulsion”, Alfred Hitchcock’s “The Rope” and “Swoon;” is now, following the success of shows like “Chicago”, “Sweeney Todd” and “Jekyl and Hyde” having an original and dramatic retelling in this 90 minute, one act musical.

It tells the story of Richard Loeb, young, intelligent and charismatic who uses his charm to control and entice his childhood friend, Nathan Leopold into assisting him in committing increasingly more dangerous and violent crimes. Their mutually parasitic need for affirmation and thrills draw them into a destructively symbiotic relationship that leads them down a path neither would have walked alone. But when a single mistake causes their perfect crime to rapidly unravel all they are left with is each other, but even that can’t last, as the final twist in this true life case causes one of them to doubt everything they had ever believed in.”

Composer-lyricist-librettist Stephen Dolginoff's two-actor musical premiered in 2003 as part of the Fourth Annual Midtown International Theatre Festival in New York City, the hugely successful season rapidly sold out, received critical acclaim and is now set for an Off-Broadway revival in May this year. With songs like “Nothing Like A Fire”, a ballad sung as the two bask in the glow of an arson fire they have just set and Loeb’s creepy “Roadster” in which he lures the unsuspecting boy to his car, Thrill Me offers an experience rarely seen today in music theatre in Melbourne.

International director, Martin Croft, renowned for his experience both performing in and directing such shows as ‘Les Miserables’ ‘The Boy From Oz’ and ‘Oliver!’ take the reigns of this show, and, along with Melbourne based accompanist and musical director Vicky Jacobs they aim to deliver to Melbourne audiences an unprecedented Australian premiere of one of New Yorks critically acclaimed new musicals.

Thrill Me stars Adrian Corbett and Nathan Butler and opens at Theatreworks in St. Kilda on 13th April. Tickets are now on sale from Theatreworks by calling 0417 795410 or 9534 3388. Tickets booked before March 11th are eligible for an advance purchase price of $16.
