Please help in relation to waapa
Mon, 27 Dec 2004, 11:31 amHey guys :) I'm 15 years old and really want to do musical theatre and am dying to go to WAAPA. My friend Patrice Topiki went and auditioned there wen she was 17 and she's now 20 having graduted from WAAPA and is in the musical We Will Rock You doing understudies for leads. But she was apparantly really lucky to be accepted at that age and she's good at singing acting and dancing. Wheras i think i can only get in on my singing...acting i'm not overly confident with and dancing i'm going to take heaps of lessons. How good do you have to be to get in & what age is good to start? I'm thinking of going to the conservatorium of music in QLD first coz u also have better chance of getting in i've heard. Can anyone tell me about the audition process and wat the course is like? Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys, Bec xo

You're right 17 is a young age and she was lucky. Not many people are accepted that young. They usualy want people who have had at least a little life experience out side of school, although there's no harm in trying. Even if it's to get used to the audition proccess, or just to get your face known, they'll see you as being keen if you keep coming back to audition. That leads to the next point. You can have twenty people tell you what it's like to audition, but without actually going there you really never know. All I can say is that it's nerve racking and yet quite fun.
As for expectations of talent, they look for people who have potential. Vocal, acting as well as movement. If you can show that you have the potential to LEARN the there is the possibility of you getting in. Admittedly females have a harder time than males, because more females are good at all three than men, but just go for it... keep training (because you can never be too good) keep auditioning, and if you're lucky then you'll get in. Remember that it doesnt just ride on how good you are, the group they pick have to be able to work together and cast a show.
Good luck Bek

Hey there,
As an alternative - I was just in Sydney and saw a show-case of a new course called "Coda" run by a school called Sing Over king. I went to all the showcases of the major schools - waapa, nida, and these guys were amazing. Apparently the course is only a year long and they only take ten people but maybe this would be good preparation - spend a year getting your singing and acting skill up to scratch. I can't tell you how slick the showcase was and i believe most graduates were placed with agents. Apparently one girl has an audition with Belvoir Street which is a major achievement for a new course. Look into it. Not sure if they have a web-site or not.
All the best

Re: Please help in relation to waapa
sing over king does have a web site, i think it is just singoverking.com (.au i tihnk)
i have heard that it is also a good course, but mainly for a singer who is pop orinetated
i auditioned for waapa last year, but i was rejected...however, i kinda was expecting that as i wasnt already a triple treat and you could say that i am definitly not a size 10! however, it didnt get my spirits down, as i know that music is what i want to do in the long run.
now i am doing a course of cinemagraphic makeup with peter frampton, which is proving to be great...and its only the first week!!!
just remember, if you dont succeed the first time, just keep trying, maybe try something a bit different, coz i know that i personally prefere the production side to theatre than the performing side, but i am told that i am an excellent performer. maybe in a few years time, i will travel and try out other schools...who knows....but just remember, you can do whatever you set out to achieve, no matter how long it takes you!!!

Re: Please help in relation to waapa
Well I don't know where you get your information from but I was at the showcase and the material that was presented included material from:
Showboat
Chicago
We Will Rock You
Hairspray
Thoroughly Modern Millie
The Witches of Eastwick
Kiss Me Kate
As well as scenes and monologues which covered the full-gamet of styles of theatre....
Mmmmm Pop didn't seem to rate a mention????
I do believe however that they do make you study pop with very good reason - Have you noticed what Australian music theatre is these days??? Mamma Mia, The Lion King, We will Rock you, O What a Night, - pop, pop, pop and more pop. Go in to any of the above auditions singing your showtunes and you've got buckleys.....

Hahaha
you can do plenty of courses in music theatre and stuff I say 2HELL with WAAPA and NIDA and all that crap yeah sure try but if you dont get in just do everything you can to better yourself go for every audition you can find and get yourself a good agent most importantly... Ive done a certificate 4 in music theatre it was the best year of my life I just had fun with it and now Im doing my own thing and its starting to work for me. Those places are bullshit but if you must there is the conservatorium in QLD too I know a chick who got in there for starters we nick names her Barbie and thats not because shes good looking shes an OK singer I guess... Matter of opinion, Acting SUX!!!! and Dancing hahahaha yeah welll anyway I dont know how she pulled it but... maybe it was because she did the cert 4 in Music theatre first who knows just try but maybe try doing a Music theatre course somewhere else to first who knows where it will take you
