Name the 5 best am. theatre co.'s in your state
Fri, 3 Dec 2004, 11:41 amI'm from Melbourne and the top 5 amatuer musical theatre companies in order are:
1): CLOC
2): Ballarat
3): Geelong Lyric
4): Geelong Footlights
5): Catchment
I'd be interested to see your posts as I know people who perform interstate and want to find out the quality theatres in their areas.
Also interested to hear from fellow victorians as to whether they agree with these choices.

Can't really see a way of implementing a poll.
As a general rule I prefer to avoid topics that aren't relevant to the national readership. Also to vote your preference from a selection presumes that the voter has experienced the entire selection...which is unlikely to be the case even in one state let alone from a national selection. And finally the poll engine only accepts about 12 options....selecting the ones to include would be a highly controversial decision in itself.
This is much more suited to a forum discussion topic.
And I might add, is likely to be highly problematic for many of the same reasons, not least being....what the hell does "best" mean?
Cheers,

Re: 5 best what?
Craig's really correct, this would be a tricky question to pose as a poll.
Maybe I could implement star-ratings for companies? Although I could imagine it might disinitegrate into as lot of one and five star ratings being given out to a very few companies.
Best is always problematical idea. Perhaps favourite is a better way of describing this sort of popularity contest? Not least because it recognises that a personal choice might be made in ignorance of some potentially better choices.
My favourites? Probably too out of date to really be relevant given the amount of theatre I've been out to see recently, but I'm going to stick my neck out...
Roleystone, Garrick and Marloo for what I perceive (often from a distance) as their strong links with their community. Playlovers for having balls occasionally. And Grads for plugging away at the classics.
Oh and I'd love to throw in Little Theatre, Bunbury along with the first three. I've only ever seen a couple of one acts that they've produced. They possibly weren't particularly memorable. But I'm sure others will share my fondness for the friendship and warm hospitality over several SW Drama Festivals.
Cheers

Re: Name the 5 best am. theatre co.'s in your state
Hi, this may sound biased, as I'm a member of the Northern Light Theatre Company, but we have just been awarded the amateur group award for 2004 in the Critics Circle award, handed out by critics who critique both amateur and professional shows....so I'd have to say Northern Light as my first choice! The Hills Musical Society are consistently producing excellent shows too, most of The MET shows I've seen have been good, and the State G&S do a good job too. I've not seen an MS production, but from all accounts they do a good job as well.

Re: 5 best what?
Why thank you Grant - (in reference to Garrick, Marloo and Roleystone) !!
Links with the community.... I hope that every single one of you manage to visit Kalgoorlie and experience first hand what a wonderful theatre and community the Goldfields Repertory Club have... in my humble opinion (and this is no way biased) no club could beat what GRC have... this club is outstanding and performs in street parades at the drop of a hat... the community spirit is what makes amateur theatre (hence community theatre) amongst other things - and these guys rate a 10 out of 5.
For example - what club do you know has more than one busy bee a month on average???? (that's just for starters!)
Miss you Kalgoorlie

Talking about Kalgoorlie - there's also a bit of 'live entertainment' at Langtree's and the 'Stables' on Hay Street - but we won't go into that... <|:op

Re: 5 best what?
That's a bit of an unfair comparison Chas. As a Life member of the GRC I can assure you it costs a lot less to spend 3 Hours at the Rep on a Friday night than Langtrees. The Rep has a standard ticket price whatever the performance but with Langtrees, Ticket prices vary according to what sort of Performance you want! The GRC also spends a lot more on its Costume budget than Langtrees. The Langtrees costumes don't really change from production to production and the Actors there pay a much higher Royalty fee to the managment. We both attack our performances with gusto and the Method style is used by both. Langtrees Shows involve mainly poorly scripted Role Play and Improvisation scenarios where the GRC include Rythym and a more diverse array of Props. I have noticed that the GRC members are also far less likely to scream " Oh God,,Oh God" during the performance. Both Groups have tackled Greek tradgedys , but this show will cost a lot more at Langtrees. The local Community in Kalgoorlie Boulder has also recognised the superior ability of the GRC, Langtrees have been banned from performing Street Theatre conversly the Rep members are much in demand for Public performances. It is also much wiser when you get Home late on a Friday night to tell your wife that you have been at the Rep rather than Langtrees. I suppose in the end the GRC has a dedicated group of Amateurs and Langtrees relys more on seasoned old Pro's who may have become a bit laid- back in their Roles. An indication of this is at the end of a Langtrees performance the Audience can be quite Limp and I have never heard a langtrees performer get a standing ovation at the end of the night.
Cheers
