Re: Fiddler on the roof
The ages are up to you! - thatÂ’s what the white bits in the script are for! - ItÂ’s your domain!
In the reality of the time, it portrays, they would have been aged anywhere from 10 to 14 year olds - possibly even younger in some cases. ‘With no dowry…’ the family flogged off girls at the first opportunity. So what ever the ages fits into what you perceive &/or what you end up with - will work!

Re: Fiddler on the roof
The ages of the daughters are not actually mentioned in the script, however there are a couple of hints and guidelinesÂ…
Tevye and Golde have been married for twenty-five years.
Therefore Tzeitel, the oldest, cannot be any older than 24.
(Also this means that Tevye and Golde should be around their mid/late forties, although they are usually played a LOT older!!)
It is also logical to assume that there can be no less than one year between each of the daughters.
Also remember that this is a piece of American Musical Theatre, not a documentary, so you cannot play the daughters too young, or it looks icky! Which means Chava, the third cannot be any younger than about 16.
The other thing to bear in mind is that while the show takes place over roughly a year, the stories that they were based on were written and published over a twenty year period!
So ages of the daughters
Tzeitel (the first daughter) 18 – 24.
Hodel (the second daughter) 17 – 23.
Chava (the third daughter) 16 – 22.
Of course the joy with these ages is that its not that difficult for any female between 16 & 24 to play between 16 & 24.
[At Roleystone our current Tzeitel is actually 17 and younger than our Hodel and Chava, who are both early twenty-something, and convincingly comes across as the older. Also doesnÂ’t hurt that sheÂ’s the taller of the three}

Re: Fiddler on the roof
hey
well there are 5 daughter in fiddler o nthe roof... and it is actuall ysaid in the musical itself that sital is under 20.... which means she is most likely nineteen.
the second eldest daughter is about 2 years younger than sital...she gets married one year after and then once again there is a time period difference and the next daught is about 2 years younger again.
the two younger girls are about 10 or 11.... they are in their childhood still and being shown how to do everyhting.
i have the dvd and my brother has performed in fiddler andi have seen it live many times... great musical...... i woudl see it many more time "if i were a rich man"

Re: Fiddler on the roof
Paul has a good idea on the ages, I believe thats the universal age span. Apparently Perchik and Fyedka are both in their mid-twenties and Motel is about the same age as Tzeitel.
I'm sorry they decided to cast girls over the age of 18. Back then girls married earlier, so in the Fiddler on the Roof I saw, Tzeitel was about 18, Hodel 17, and Chava 16.
And a side note- Two friends and I are performing "Matchmaker" for a Broadway night at our school. I'm Tzeitel.

Re: Fiddler on the roof
Hi, I'm a fourth form student in New Zealand.
Our school performed "Fiddler On The Roof" in about July.
Everything went so well, the actual production was excellent, and the casting was amazing. Tevye was by far the best, as he slid into his character perfectly! (even for his first time acting, which nobody believes, but it is true).
On the whole I love the musical and i am certain if given the chance i will not refuse to see it again. I hope others take my advice when i say it will make you laugh so hard, but at the same time there are some real soft moments, so dont forget your Klennex
