"INTO THE WOODS"

Perhaps it wasn’t exactly what Stephen Sondheim planned when he penned Into The Woods, but Music Theatre On Location – a newly formed production company – are taking the title literally and will present the show in the woods at the Cumberland State Forest in October.

Into The Woods is one of the worldÂ’s most popular musicals and has gained incredible acclaim on Broadway. It won two Tony Awards in 1988 and the revival production in 2002 was nominated for eight awards, winning two of them, including Best Revival of a Musical.

Music Theatre On LocationÂ’s production, featuring a brilliant cast led by Urinetown star Sophie Carter, opens on October 6, 2004 and runs for a strictly limited season of eight performances, closing October 16.

Rob Martin, Artistic Director for Music Theatre On Location, says that along with having fun, the company’s ethos is “to embrace diverse and daring performances through placing Musical Theatre in locations that reflect the setting and content of the story, offering the audience a complete theatrical experience.

“Along with Into the Woods, we are planning to produce Once On This Island on Shark Island, West Side Story at Everleigh rail yards, Pirates Of Penzance on Balmoral Beach, The Secret Garden in Sydney’s Botanical Gardens and Children Of Eden, again, in Cumberland State Forest - over the next two years, with the possibility of touring New Zealand and interstate Australia as well.”

Into The Woods blends various familiar fairy tales with an original story of the childless Baker and his wife, who catalyse the action of the story by attempting to reverse a curse on their family in order to have a child.

The show deals with the changing human condition through wonderful music and a very witty script. Themes of love, family, togetherness, social position and your role in the community are evident.

“It’s a wonderful show that we’re very excited about putting on, especially in this location,” Mr Martin said.

“It is truly a wonderful production for all ages and we have assembled a cast that we’re so excited about.”

Response to auditions in May was phenomenal and has allowed the producers to form an experienced cast from right across the country.

The production will be directed by Rob Martin and musical direction is by Jeff Fisher, who has worked on the Sydney theatre scene for a number of years.

Apart from the host of Tony Awards Into The Woods has taken home, the show was also nominated for nine Drama Desk Awards, four Drama League Awards, four Outer Critics Circle awards and a number of LA Ovation Awards.

The show reminds us that there will be times when each of us must journey into the woods, but that we must mind the future and the past.

ItÂ’ll be an experience.
