Would you believe I've got mine all filled out but I'm still in two minds whether to audition?! It's all a confidence thing. Still, there is nothing to lose I suppose :P

Re: WAAPA App.
Audition! Do it... do it.... You've got nothing to lose and everything to gain if you do audition. However it goes, you get to tuck that experience under your belt, and provided the panel doesn't savage you with their teeth, you come away with less nerves for the next time. Even if you think you won't get it, you'll do a great audition. I find the auditions where I'm pretty sure I'm not going to get in, are the ones where I just lay some vocal smackdown!

Re: WAAPA App.
I think it's the acting audition that worries me the most. I don't really know what they'd be looking for in terms of reciting a monologue. I know it's characterisation, but what specifically?
Can anyone shed some light on this?

Re: WAAPA App.
I'll chip in (I'm sorry, I know I talk too much). I think what anyone would look for acting wise is definitely demonstrate that you can create a story, a context - and demonstrate this from the beginning. Do it in your song, not just your monologue readings, because as a music theatre student, you'll be expected to marry songs and acting together. So demonstrate that you can create a character, a scenario, a backstory to your songs (and then your monologue). Remember, there's no wrong answers, be imaginative, take journeys mentally and try to envisage what an interesting set of events might be that would lead your character to this particular song or monologue.

Re: WAAPA App.
Anyone can audition for WAAPA but I do know like NIDA they have a look in mind more than acting ability. WAAPA like NIDA wants to produce an acadamy award winner. NIDA has Mel Gibson and WAAPA is pinning its hopes on Hugh Jackman. Lisa McCune has already achieved one of their goals with a Golden Globe and if Ditch Davies (Blue Heelers) is another WAAPA grad.
WAAPA will teach you to act on stage and in front of the camera. If you are interested in applying go for it.
I was 30something when I applied for the Lighting Design course and got in. It was great, HARD work and sometimes deflating but worth every minute.

They prefer you to have finished year 12 or be finishing year 12, and then they accept few if any people straight out of school. They prefer people to have what they refer to as life experience.

I'd prefer to think that NIDA (and WAAPA mind you) will select people according to what the industry needs at that time, rather than making looks a major criteria. I believe the first years in NIDA this year were told that more boys were accepted for their class because there was a lack of males in the industry.

Re: WAAPA App.
Hi everyone,
First I would like to say thanks for all the little bits of info that you so freely give out for the well being of other aspiring talent. Secondly (feeling slightly stupid) I have a couple questions concerning the waapa music theatre audition/application.
1. As the combined length of both the ballad and up-tempo songs has to be no longer than 4 minutes (combined), are you then allowed to slightly edit the songs? eg. cut out one verse, or a chorus etc.
2. Do you have to put in copies of the songs that you will be singing in the audition?
I have read through the application form and have not come across the answers to these questions, so perhaps some out there could help me. If not, I will revert back to my original plan of ringin WAAPA.
Thanks

Re: WAAPA App.
you may cut the songs however you like. they dont mind as long as they hear how good your voice is for 4 minutes. generally cut a verse, not a chorus. or if the chorus repeats itself then only do it once. you should never really do repeat bars.
you dont need copies of the songs, just have you accompianist copies on hand just in case.

I'm 22, so hopefully I'm not too young! I think as long as you can show maturity and professionalism in your performance, what does it matter, how old you are. There are plenty of parts for performers of all ages (despite the fact that all the parts I want to play are written for middle aged people!).

Still deciding on what to sing...
From everyone's tips on this forum, I've ruled out anything Lloyd Webber, from Les Mis or "Memory".
I hope this doesn't discourage anyone singing these songs though. I think it's fine as long as you can do the song justice.

hey everyone,
In the audition pack is just a pink booklet with all the monologues you can choose from, consisting of shakespeare, jacobean and contemporary.
Just a note on front page saying what u need for the musical theatre and acting courses, nothing too exciting.
Good luck and chookers class of 2005!

Re: WAAPA App.
You'll never know what they are looking for. All you can do is take the monologue that suits you the best, perform it the way you see the character, rehearse and rehearse til you're deaming it and ask other people around you to see it. It is so important to get used to performing it in front of people because the way you behave is always different and more inhibited when others are there.
It doesn'T matter if you foget a line or two in the audition, it's important to know how your character feels about everything, to know them inside out so that if you do go blank you can keep focus and keep going. That's the only safety net you have, knowing everything you can about the person you are playing. If you focus on how you look and sound (though it's important to be strong vocally) and what everyone else is thinking it'll only stop you from giving your best. A good book is Dean Carey's masterclass for men or women,(I'm sure there's a copy at the Alexander Library) at the beginning of the book are some exercises that help you discover the detail about your character, I've found it helpful in the past.
So anyway...relax, enjoy the chance to show your abilities and if you don't get in and you believe it's the only job in the world you can do there are heaps of other ways to go about it, maybe you'll make it without the help of a school.

If you don't get in you should look at a new course called "CODA" at a new school in Sydney called Sing Over King. They have the most amazing working professionals as tutors and i believe that some of their first year grads have been cast or are under consideration for pro shows and film. Might be worth a look. www.singoverking.com

Hello Everybody!
I've just received my audition time in the mail! VERY nervous about it all, but also very excited.
I think the scariest part is the dance audition. I suck at dancing!!! But I think my acting is my best... We'll see I guess!
By the way, I think there was a question in the thread about how old people are, I'm 21! Not sure what age groups in particular they like... I think if you've got the talent, you've got a chance.
GOOD LUCK EVERYBODY!!!! And GO GO GO Class of 2005

Spamming scams
You know, despite detesting these kind of spam-money-scams, I'm almost tempted to give the guy a couple of dollars for at least having the decency to use regular grammar and punctuation and spell-check his scam email - which puts him in the nicest 1% of email-scam-artists in my opinion (not exactly a ringing endorsement mind you). Few things infuriate me more than getting a scam email where every second word is in capitals and every phrase ends in an exclamation mark.

But Craig K, in the above email scam I count
5 misplaced, missing or unnecessary commas
3 misplaced capitals
1 spelling error
1 missing plural
2 instances of misuse of word tense
4 words either added to or missing from a sentence to make it grammatically incorrect or nonsensical
I'm afraid they haven't convinced me yet to invest.
Cheers
