Petition to release The Boy from Oz (Broadway) on DVD/VHS
Wed, 4 Aug 2004, 03:17 amHello from New York City!
The fans of "The Boy From Oz" (starring one of your more stellar exports -- Hugh Jackman!!) are petitioning the producers to record the show on DVD. Since it would be an excellent way to share Mr. Jackman's performance with theater goers all over the world, we ask that you help us by signing the petition. The link is:
http://www.petitiononline.com/BFOonDVD/petition.html
I know it is a longshot to get this done (though shows have been
released in the past - Victor / Victoria, J&H, the recent London
production of Oklahoma starring...what's his name...LOL) but in a month we've collected almost 4,000 signatures (including a cast member or two and several of their family members - talk about an ultimate home movie). There's obviously a healthy bit of interest.
This could also help motivate producers to release more shows on DVD -
nothing will replace live theater but it is a chance for those who
are unable to attend for whatever reason (financial, geographical,
etc) to experience a bit of theater magic...
Thanks for reading this far and remember...if you're gonna live, LIVE!

hmmm... cynical old thing that I am, I would suggest this is a spam address generation scam, and if you sign up your email will be added to umpteen spam lists...
I don't know this for sure, but it's worth putting that into your decision process, I think.
Regards,
Jason

Dear Jason,
I can remember being, well, very young, and seeing Peter Allen on "The Tonight Show"...
I've seen The Boy from Oz 22 times (with tickets for 3 more shows before it closes)...
I own every US DVD release of Hugh Jackman's, as well as Erskineville Kings, Corelli, Paperback Hero, Halifax...
The petition is for real...and we have nearly 4000 real signatures, including members of the cast and crew.
Please put *that* in your decision process as well. :)
Warm regards from NYC,

Hi Lizzy,
Each person will make up their mind according to their desire/fear of releasing personal info to someone on the internet who has approached them blindly. Or on a public forum like this.
I meant no offence to you personally, but I have seen so many email-farming scams come and go over the years, I think it is wise to exercise extreme personal caution around this kind of unsolicited approach. (Particularly if you *HATE* spam).
Nice pic of you and Hugh, though... ever thought of posting it to your website?
Jason

Re: Petition to release The Boy from Oz (Broadway) on DVD/VHS
When I finally get my life back in order, Jason (changing jobs, working on the petition, etc.), I plan on revamping my entire web site and including a whole "A Year at The Boy from Oz" page. :)
I cannot argue with your reasoning about people approaching with caution. :)
And thanks...glad you like the photo :)

Re: Petition to release The Boy from Oz (Broadway) on DVD/VHS
Not intending to discredit the petitioners, and I fully understand there are some pretty die-hard fans out there...but is a DVD of a stage show really such a good idea?
In my view, such attempts to put a live stage show on film usually make the show die a horrible death...because everything ends up looking so (surprise, surprise) STAGED.
I saw Hugh Jackman's filmed version of Oklahoma, and even though it was shot and edited especially to go to DVD, it really seemed bizarre. The original film version of Oklahoma worked because it was translated into the film world, with real set locations (the only bit that seems stupid now is the staged dream/dance sequence). To film it on a theatrical set with the limitations of stage seems incongruous with the possibilities of film.
I think live theatre is fantastic...but what makes it work is the very EVENT, the fact that it is live and immediate, and that you are watching it in a shoulder-to-shoulder mob of witnesses, whose very breathing becomes in synch with the rhythm and tempo of the play; it's a shared creation by the performers creating the context and the audience agreeing to fill in the missing pieces, suspending disbelief and endowing the world of the stage with the elements required to become emotionally involved with the story being told.
Putting that stage show on film removes the vital element of audience participation...in fact, the very VITALITY. It would exist as an interesting 'record' of a stage show, but could never supply any of the potential a stage show can.
Having said this, I've not seen The Boy From Oz, and it may, for all I know, translate very well being enacted before a camera.
Cheers,
Craig

I am French,
I have signed the petition and hope so much to see our boy on DVD
for me and those of us who are unable to get to it in NY.
Hugh win his Tony in this show, it would be incredible if they wouldn't keep this for the future
