Song choices WAAPA NIDA
Tue, 21 Oct 2003, 02:51 pmHi all,
I'm an 18y/o female, and next month I'm auditioning for, among other places, WAAPA m.t and NIDA.
Could I have some suggestions please for song choices (remembering that 2 songs should only come to 4 mins)?
I am a soprano with very strong technique and am comfy in most sub-genres of MT.
Is there any thing in particular I should take care to avoid in song selection, and do you have any additional audition tips besides those common to practically every audition.
How many people are on the panel and what is the interview like?
TELL ME EVERYTHING YOU KNOW! lol
Peace,
Jay

Song choices WAAPA NIDA - Sondheim
DO NOT SING SONDHEIM!!!!
The man is brilliant at highlighting your good points...
While at the same time he is fiendish in at the same time being able to show up every single fault in your technique...

Hey... That's the thing with auditions...
If you know you are brilliant, then sing what the hell you want!
You'll get in with your stirring heartfelt rendition of Row Row Row Your Boat.
However for mere mortals...
Listen with a slightly critical ear to even the best singers sing Sondheim, and suddenly you become aware of faults you never even noticed...
And hey, I've never auditioned for any of these places, so what would I know...

Re: Song choices WAAPA NIDA - Sondheim
Jay, exactly HOW strong is your technique/range...
If you can manage the end of "Glitter and Be Gay" from Bernstein's "Candide" then do that...
Although it's well known enough a song (aria?) that if you start it you HAVE to finish with the horrendous ending.
But if you can pull it off you'll have them eating out of your hand
:-)
