Hey guys, have a look below at the press release I was sent for Altona's "A Slice of Saturday Night". I was down at Altona on the weekend and caught a glimpse of the show.....All I can say is Yeah Baby. For those of you into the Swinging Sixties, and love a bright vibrant musical then this is for you.
Following the highly acclaimed production of “Hello Dolly” in July 2002, Altona City Theatre is proud to present “A Slice of Saturday Night” as their latest theatre venture.

Just to give you the feel of the show… it’s 1964: it’s Saturday night at the “Club A-Go-Go”; and three blokes and four birds are out on the pull. The girls, chalk-faced, pale-lipped and lacquered to perfection, are desperate to look like Twiggy, Sandy Shaw or Dusty Springfield. The lads, in their button-down collars and leather caps are all would-be Beatles or embryo Donovans. However, beneath the girls skimpy Mary Quaint, St Laurent copied dresses beat virginal Barbara Cartland hearts, while inside the lads’ cool hipster trousers lurk the impulses that have driven adolescents to distraction since the dawn of time.

So, hereÂ’s the story so farÂ… Sue is going out with Gary, who chats up Penny and any other bit of fluff that looks his way. Sharon fancies Rick who fancies Sharon but canÂ’t pluck up the courage to tell her because she hasnÂ’t told him. Eddies fancies Bridget who doesnÂ’t fancy anyone. And so, watched over by aging rocker Eric (rubber-legs) De Vene, the clubÂ’s seen-it-all, done-it-all owner, we follow them as they wend their way through teenage sexual moves, as rigid and predictable as any New Guinea tribesmanÂ’s initiation rights.

Altona is proud to have acclaimed Director/Choreographer Tamara Finch working with the company on this production. Patrons familiar with Altona City Theatre will remember Tamara’s work on shows such as “Snoopy” and “Carousel”. Recently Tamara has been involved in productions such as “Chicago”, “Guys and Dolls” and “Jesus Christ Superstar”, as both a Director and Choreographer. The company is also excited to have Tom Ryan on board as the Musical Director. Tom’s experience as both a Musician and Musical Director has led him to the role of Musical Director for shows such as “Hair”, “Grease”, “Guys & Dolls” and an earlier production of “A Slice of Saturday Night”.

“A Slice of Saturday Night” was written by the Heatherley Brothers and is their homage to the Swinging Sixties. This musical is a knowing and affectionate look back on the 60’s that is bound to have you reminiscing your younger days. With a fast-moving score of doo-wop, soft rock, and many laughs (and a few reminiscent sighs) along the way, this shows takes you through all the highs and lows of teenage emotions.
