I have written a musical comedy and I am seeking advise on how to go about getting the play staged. I have no practical experience in theater, and lack the confidence to act, but enjoy the creativity that amateur dramatics allows. I have received positive reactions from my friends with regard to the play, but I am hoping to interest someone with theatrical experience to give an opinion, and advise on whether or not the play might be suitable to be performed, and if so, how to go about it. Are there any companies that might help in this area? Please contact me denyslunn@hotmail.com if you would like a copy of the script (via email). Your opinion and advice will be much appreciated.

Rag and Bone Theatre Group Inc

Rag & Bone Theatre Group Inc was born just for you! We were specifically formed to produce new works by Australian playwrights. We are always on the lookout for new scripts by new Australian writers! Of course, there is no guarantee we will be able to stage your show, but if you want to submit it to us for a read, an opinion and whether we think it might have legs, feel free to go to our website www.ragandbonetheatre.com, click on the Contact Us tab, and then click on the Submit a Script link. And if your niche in theatre is to write, this is not a bad place to be!

Following on from Walter Plinge...

Walter Plinge has pointed you in my direction because Lazy Bee Scripts is a publisher of (amongst other things) musical plays. (We're based in Pohmland, but we work worldwide and our portfolio includes Australian authors such as Johnny Grim.) However, publication and performance are independent. Publication is not a guarantee of performance; performance is not a guarantee of publication. (Usually performance will result in a better product being offered for publication.) "Musical play" is a broad category, so it helps a potential producer if you can say more about what you are offering. (Is this "juke box" musical, or have you written the music? If the latter, is it available as sheet music? What instruments is it arranged for? Do you have a backing CD? How many actors are needed? Is there a chorus? Title? Synopis...)

musical play

Thank you everyone for responding to my post. I have received some very helpfull advice. The play is full length, with two acts. It has 2 male and two female actors. I have written and recorded the music (home studio) to a cd. The music can be performed with just a piano, (I do have sheet music for this, but not for the drums, bass and guitar). The music is a simple pop / ballad style, and is not complicated. The play is mainly set in a 1 bedroom flat and is therefore minimal. I have been advised that the play needs to be extended by at least 20 minutes and am now in the process of adding more dialogue. Feedback and suggestions have been constructive, helpfull and positive, and very much appreciated.

Why does it need to be

Why does it need to be extended? Simply to make it run for a certain amount of time? That, IMHO, is a very poor reason for writing new dialogue and music. Only do it if you have something more to say, rather than because someone tells you it doesn't run for XXX minutes. www.meltheco.org.au

constructive criticism

The reason for writing this post was to receive advice and opinion, and I appreciate you taking the time to express yours. It is a valid opinion, but the person who suggested the play be extended also suggested where and how. She encouraged me to think about a sub plot and even changing its period to the 60's, and, being a comedy the more one liners the better. At 70 / 75 minutes it is perhaps a little short, and I believe she is right that the play would benefit from some of the above, and be of a more appropriate length. As well as writing this play, I enjoy composing music and painting and I actively seek constructive criticism from others (especially, but not exclusively knowledgeable people) and assess it. In this case I agree with her.

I agree with Jeff! The

I agree with Jeff! The  production music numbers can always be fleshed & padded out with with dance routines or whatever.  Also I have found that beyond just reading a script, it's best to add at least 3 to 5 minutes per  page. Which alows for staging, movements, laughs &/or applause!

I see your in Bayswater, Garrick is in Guildford wWhich would be a handy ameatre group, as it's just up the road  'n around the corner.

Just a thought Dean, maybe

Just a thought Dean, maybe you & Jonny Grim could work on a show about Aude Queen Bess (Lzzy) for her Diamond Jubilee!

http://amdram.co.uk/articles/bunbury-players-and-kats-diamond-celebrations/

It has plenty in it for comedy &/or farce!

Also Anyone looking for a one act play this may help!
