Interesting Question

Actually, is there any such thing as an amateur opera company? I don't believe I have come across one. I worked in the UK with Pro-am (Professional musicians, director, conductor and leads, amateur chorus and crew.) on more tham one occasion but I feel that a full scale amateur Opera company would be difficult. I know we have G&S Societies in every State but that is operetta. I have for example never heard of a fully amateur "Aida". (The Verdi not the Elton John.) Is that all there is? Well if that's all there is my friend, then let's keep dancing. www.tonymoore.id.au

There's one based in

There's one based in Bunbury, WA; a couple of my friends used to be involved in it before moving up to Perth. It's called the South West Opera Company. They do operettas as well as operas, I believe. --- Louisa Fitzhardinge University Dramatic Society http://uds.asn.au

There was two in Bunbury,

There was two in Bunbury, but the Golden West Opera Company became defunct, when their Director Terri Green , moved to Frankston in Victoria.

I'm sure Terri would have hung out her shingle,as a singing teacher there & may still be doing the odd opera occasionally.

Louisa is right I believe the South West Opera is still operating.

When I was there they tended to do Operettas & Concerts to get the bums on sets, to pay for the full blown Operas.

Louise if you contact the VCA or the Vic Opera/Aust opera I'm sure they would be able to advice you.

Hurrah.

"Well, me hats off to the Duke" as they say. I am most impressed with amateur companies doing grand opera. Good on em. Is that all there is? Well if that's all there is my friend, then let's keep dancing. www.tonymoore.id.au
