Right, this is a petition for a Phantom of the Opera, Australian Cast Recording/Filmed Stage Performance. we're lead to believe that due to some form of contract relating to the O.C.R there can be no other full recordings in english. But really, we have an amazing cast performing in melbourne at the moment who deserve to have a recording or a filmed stage performance. We only have about 250 signatures at the moment so help would be much appreciated. Thanks

Noble cause

But... I have a feeling any petition won't be honoured. You forget that Australia is a rather small market for selling cast recordings, while America is huge. Any costs made in re-recording a cast original soundtrack would probably not be covered by sales. Further to that, there's probably a lot of legal reasons why the cast soundtrack is usually the US one. Legal issues, like performers contracts, the contracts for all of the musicians, composers, and other artistic talent... etc. I don't know a lot about the topic, but as big name musicals across the world are generally under contract to be presented exactly the same no matter what country it's in, or who's part of the show, I think the greater issue is: Why aren't we encouraging more original local Australian musical theatre, and why aren't we producing soundtracks for those? (Answer of course: the market is too small. So it comes full circle) I applaud the efforts though. I've seen it in shops. Also available online. Details here - http://shopping.yahoo.com/p:Phantom%20of%20the%20Opera%20%5BCanadian%20Cast%5D:1921291713 NA wrote - Why aren't we encouraging more original local Australian musical theatre, and why aren't we producing soundtracks for those? Agree, more could be done to support Aussie musicals, but many are recorded. Here's a great resource for those - www.middle8.com/ Most of the big songs from Phantom have been recorded by the original Aussie cast on solo CDs. Again, look at middle 8 for details. Hope this helps. 8-)

How funny - I was going to

How funny - I was going to add the url for Middle8, but decided not to at the last minute. I know the shop owner, he's a great guy! (WalterP, you wouldn't happen to work for them would you?) Australian Cast Recording

Having just seen the Phantom of the Opera preformed here in Brisbane I cannot understand the logic of NOT recording the outstanding cast. Surely therre shouldn't be an issue as Andrew Lloyd Webber still receives royalties for the production. To record the Australian cast is in no way denergrating the outstanding preformances of past casts, if anything it is a compliment to the timeless quality of such a show and to those that preform it.
