I am hoping you (the reader) can give me some /any advise. I am hoping to find work as a rehearsal pianist and/or musician in an orchestra in any musical. Where should I go? What are my chances? Are rehearsal pianists in great demand or are there too many of us and not enough work? I havent had any experience, but I have been classically trained for 15 years and have done years of accompanying. Also when they say they are an ameateur musical company, does that mean no one (actors/ musicians) gets paid? Should I do payless musical work, just for the experience before I go to England? please help!

In my experience many

In my experience many amateur companies will pay rehearsal pianists and pit musicians although they probably don't pay full professional rates. (some will) If Adelaide is anything to go by there are not enough good rehearsal pianists to go around. Get word out there. Find some MD's who work in the amateur world. If you are a member of the Musicians Union have a word with them about opportunities where you are. Is that all there is? Well if that's all there is my friend, then let's keep dancing. www.tonymoore.id.au

location?

Where are you? In perth, my understanding is that there are always people looking for rehearsal pianists. I'm not sure where to look though? maybe check the upcoming shows/auditions lists and contact the company putting it on. Alternatively, simply find all the companies in your area/city and contact them all with your details so they can contact you when needed. My understanding is that most companies would (and should) pay a rehearsal accompanist, even if not standard rates. Nev It's the simple things stupid...

thanks so much

thank you for your help. I actually live on the central coast (which is one hour away from sydney, NSW) where theatre is almost 'extinct' (only small no. of amateur companies). There is an amateur theatre company which i was hoping to approach, but i wanted to prepare myself before i speak with them. I didnt what them to take advantage of my inexperience of the 'business/money' side of things. I have a weird but strong feeling that they wont pay...i dont know why. oh well, i wont know for sure until i find out. thanks again for you advise. any more would be greatly appreciated. :)
