The Blue Room and yellow glass theatre inc proudly present: ANTHEMS FOR DOOMED YOUTH by Simon R. Holt More than the photographs or the eyewitnesses reports, it is the poetry of the First World War that has embedded the horror of that time in our consciousness, producing some of the most outstanding and poignant poems of this century. Perth composer Simon R. Holt has collected 24 of these poems and set them to music in a new musical work named ANTHEMS FOR DOOMED YOUTH. Represented are the works of Wilfred Owen and Siegfried Sassoon but also included are the less familiar war poets such as Benjamin Perét and Alfred Lichtenstein as well as translations of verse from Germany and France. The shattering, ironic realism, tenderness and regret reflected in these poems is also mirrored in Holt’s musical style that ranges from classical to musical theatre. Together they encompass the waste and violence of war. “War poetry gives us incredible incite into both the poet’s war experiences as well as their psychological state at the time,” says Holt. “By setting them to music and performed dramatically, we hope to reintroduce these important texts to audiences, especially as the themes in these poems are still relevant today.” yellow glass theatre inc (the company that brought you LAST DAYS OF WEIMAR, I SING! & RENT) proudly presents this WORLD PREMIERE PRODUCTION performed by an all-male cast and accompanied by the composer and string trio. Musically directed by Simon Holt and directed by Chris Kabay.
