Showing at the Stirling Theatre, Innaloo Community Centre, Morris Place, Innaloo for two nights only, Friday 7th and Saturday 8th June, an hour of entertainment by SPY (the Stirling Players’ Youth). Curtain up at 7.30 pm. Prepare yourself for a luscious smorgasbord – and a free cuppa at the interval – all for $10.
To tickle the taste buds, the entrée is:
‘Because’ is a set of three 5-minute mini plays, with a moral to each tale. Written by young Australian actress, Geire Kami (Pinnock) and directed by the SPY co-ordinator Christine Ellis.
Cody When a young girl (Prea Cunningham) goes to meet a secret admirer, the class pest (Nicholas Richards) turns up and looks like he will cramp her style when her boyfriend arrives.
Jealousy Two friends (Emma Dolden, Moira Barker) meet, and one apologises for not being able to go out the night before. However, will her friend believe her?
The Eight O’clock Session When two girls (Clare Smale, Samantha Romeo) meet in the local cafe, some home truths come out.
The main course:
‘Jingle, Jangle’ Written by Melbournian children’s author, Michael Dugan and directed by Elyse Simich
The definition of Jingle jangle is ‘easy going and beautiful’, but for poor Fiona (Teale Harrison) who went for work experience at a jingle factory - an office where TV jingles are developed. For Fiona it is a gift, but for her school friends (Samantha Romeo, Clare Smale, Emma Hall, and Ellie Prober) her rhyming drives them crackers. The girls ask the school’s heartthrob, Dave (Josh Lang) to help. Even the school principal, Mr Suckerton (Edward Andrew) is concerned about Fiona.
And the ever popular sweet course:
‘Urbs Urbis’ (Latin for a city and its surrounds) was written in 1980 by the highly esteemed, WA lecturer in ‘theatre’, Tony Nichols and Flinders lecturer in dietetics, Felicity Lyons.
Directed by Courtney Turner and Sophie Prober
As the citizens (Thira Ang, Shannon Berry, Prea Cunningham, Teale Harrison, Josh Lang, and Nicholas Richards) of the city demonstrate, it is the people and the life in the city that makes it what it is, not simply the bricks and mortar.
The scenery for this piece was made from milk crates with lights inside. This gave a very effective and impressive skyline of blocks of city flats at night. All of the stage managing was capably carried out by Sophie Prober. The lighting and sound effects on youngsters’ productions is often a couple of floods and a crackly music track, here Mike Smale and Brendan Ellis put some thought and effort into the three productions.
It is wonderful to see young kids filled with enthusiasm and being so stage aware. Some adults could learn a great deal from these 11 – 15 year olds. Be proud, you all did very well. Keep up the good work.
