The Eight: Reindeer Monologues - Lazy Susan's Comedy Den
Mon, 3 Dec 2012, 06:43 pmIf the word 'Christmas' cripples you with images of shopping madness, rabid crowds and exploding turkeys, this show is for you. Join Santa's reindeer as they uncover his dirty secrets.
Surviving the silly season just isn't complete without drug-taking reindeer and asexual elves. Bring your twisted sense of humour and leave your sensitivities at home. A great evening spent in a cosy, intimate venue with engaging characters and laughs aplenty.

"laughs aplenty" ?
I must have missed most of them then. I certainly brought my "twisted sense of humour" with me.
I thought the show itself was good - particularly the acting. It was the hype I had a problem with - it built the show up as something hilarious, which I don't think it was really intended to be at all.
A clear case of misleading advertising in my view.

I was in Thursday's
I was in Thursday's audience and you couldn't stop the audience guffawing. Sure, plenty of dark bits, particularly in the second half of act two but the audience's laughter would seem to knock your argument sideways. Yes, it's a black comedy, but the laughter was there, as I can attest from my attendance. Don't think it was misleading at all. Only to Mr Stinger.

For the record...
Just for the record, the word "hilarious" was not used in any of the marketing materials used by Groovy Boots Theatre in the promotion of this show.
Neither has it appeared in any resulting media coverage. However, if any of that media coverage did give that impression through the choice of other language used, then the matter about "misleading advertising" needs to be taken up with the journalist and media outlet in question - this is something beyond Groovy Boots Theatre's control.

My apologies...
...I stupidly thought 'darkly comic' meant 'funny'. My bad.
To reiterate, I have no criticism of the show itself. I had read the other reviews. I was prepared to be offended, but I left feeling a bit depressed. If I'd known that, I would have spent my theatre time and dollar elsewhere, that's all.

The word does appear as a quote from a review in the Naples Daily News. This is on the TAZ Entertainment booking site.
