Falling to the Top

What th...? Why is there no review for this? Look, with one performance left, there's little I can do to convince you to see the premiere season of this completely original musical. At this stage, you either have final night tickets or you don't. But I wanted to publicly thank Playlovers, and the cast & crew, for a fabulous evening's entertainment. Falling to the Top follows four ex-contestants from reality TV singing show "Pop Rocket". Although Salli-Ann, Fondue, Feliciabel, and the other one, never actually won "Pop Rocket", they have banded (heh heh) together to take the music scene by storm. Except they're not very good. Enter new manager, Spicey Lamangino. The costumes get raunchier and the songs get more suggestive. Talent isn't necessary -- after all, it only alienates the fans who can't sing! Tensions rise. One of the girls leaves the group and forges a solo career. Competition! The two camps try to outdo each other as the raunchiness and innuendo escalates. Hilarity ensues. I really don't want to give away anything else. The show was laugh-out-loud hilarious (with a little bit of wee -- thanks, Chris). The musical numbers were alternately great and cringe-worthy (and occasionally both) as the script required. The cast was uniformly, unquestionably, superb. Breehan Jones, Kimberley Harris, Claire Taylor, and Mariaelena Velletri ARE the Divalettes. Wonderfully supported by Chris Bedding, Manuao Teaotonga, and Jess Dowson. Special congrats also to the astonishingly gorgeous Joanna Tyler and clean-cut-in-a-manly-way David Gray, as chorus characters who nearly stole the entire show with singing, dancing, and a thousand-and-one bit parts. Tyler Jones -- thank you. I hope you go far. (That'd give the rest of us a chance.) JB
