The Last Days Of Judas Iscariot - Upstart Theatre Company
Sat, 9 June 2012, 11:14 pmIn a dark, cold and dirty Fremantle warehouse lies hope, the final chance of redemption for the dammed. The place reeks of despair before the play even begins. Fortunately this isn't a reflection of the performance, merely an apt re purposing of an interesting space. A quick rundown of the play: The play centers around the trial of Judas Iscariot, where his responsibility for the death of Christ is called into question. But who has really dammed Judas? And where does the line of responsibility lie?
This play is something special, well written and tackles the contradictions of faith, forgiveness and truth. The cast from start to finish gave powerful performances that brought tears to my eyes twice. I really enjoyed the re-imagining of famous characters, such as cock-rocker Pontius Pilate (making high-heeled boots on a man look good)or Saint Monica, the nagging new yorker. There were laughs as well however some jokes fell a bit flat, possibly due to the American references which are lost on a Perth audience. The story is truly heart breaking and it will leave you wondering where you draw your line in the sand.
Highly recommended if you don't mind a bit a swearing.
