The Secret Garden By Frances Hodgson Burnett Adapted for stage by June A Balfour & Nigel-Munro Wallis Directed by June A Balfour Presented by Nash Theatre Merthyr Road Uniting Church, New Farm The Secret Garden is a charming story of innocence that this stage adaptation has spoiled with largely hollow and repetitive dialogue. The story’s morals like the importance of positive thinking and the beauty of nature were time after time described in detail rather than allowing them to speak for themselves in the subtle way of the book. There were many scenes with characters speaking aloud to themselves or to imaginary animals –pointless chat that failed to capture the purity of the tale. But it wasn’t just a bad script that let the classic down. The key actors were also lacking in experience and confidence, coming across very impassive... By Kellie Scott.
