She Stoops to Conquer
Sun, 1 Nov 2009, 11:16 pmOh dear. It's been a while since I've visited and it now seems we have to declare all interests and associations or be accused of unbiased reviewing.
Well then: I know the director (never worked with 'im, though). I am friends with two of the cast and have met two others. 4 out of 15 - a little over 25%.
WHAT: She Stoops to Conquer
WHEN: Running Oct 31 to Nov 14
WHERE: The Dolphin Theatre, UWA campus, Nedlands, WA
WHO: The Graduate Dramatic Society (GRADS)
I have heard of the play though never before seen nor read it. In fact, it wasn't until browsing the program in the final minutes before curtain that I was informed that it's a "warm-hearted and frantic comedy in which a series of small misunderstandings escalate into a glorious farce".
Cool. I enjoy farce (provided it's done well). One of the best shows I've ever seen was "Noises Off" and I love stuff like "Out of Order" and "What the Butler Saw". So you know where I'm coming from.
"She Stoops to Conquer" is all that, wrapped up in a package of truly exquisite language. Not only is it hilarious but a joy to listen to. Gloriously rich and chewable lines; a gourmet meal for the palate.
And delivered exquisitely. It was an absolute pleasure to be drawn into these characters' world, partake of their exchanges, and admire their effortless presentation of it all. I know there are some who view with suspicion any sort of period play, dreading an indecipherable ancient dialogue. Not here. 'Tis common language but delivered with the intelligence and aplomb of an accomplished writer (Oliver Goldsmith).
The plot is simple, the ensuing confusions hilarious, the dialogue delicious, the performances exemplary, and the bosoms heaving. Don't be put off by the ticket prices - it's a fabulously entertaining production, in a very good venue, and well worth the evening out. Get in quick before word of mouth gets around, and before your November calendar fills up with pre-Christmas events and end-of-year productions.
And yes, it's a damn slick set.
