HAIR -The Musical
Tue, 15 May 2007, 08:43 pmHAIR The Musical at the Regal Theatre.
I went along to this show having only little knowledge of the show and score, and so little expectations
were already placed!
It was interesting to see quite a different set design, and I think what they had done with this very
presentational design was very appropriate for the Regal, and worked reasonably well for the show!
The show contains only a small cast, which you could argue worked for and aganinst, as it could have been
stronger with a larger chorus, posessing more strength and energy from such big chorus numbers, and the overall
appearance of it.
The main query that I had was of Rob Mills and his accent. I am still unsure whether he was supposed to change
from his Manchester accent to a very strong American one, with still the 'Manchester' song....:s
It was quite noticeable the way that he changed it, and it was that obvious that I am really wondering whether
it is supposed to happen to that character, Claude, or not.
Mills' vocals were reasonably done well (He has certainly improved since his IDOL days) and it was also great
to see that, yes he can sing in harmony!!
For a show that had no changing of set items, the pace was not great, it did appear to seem a little awkward
at times, however it still managed to score some good transitions!
Lighting design was excellent, the design definately captivated the mood and atmosphere required for this show
and all cues were exceptional in that regard! I wish i could say the same for the sound, but it really was
quite terrible! Mics were being brought in quite late, and particularly in the louder vocals, the sound
equiptment was not sustaing some of the stronger cast voices!
I think Cosima Devito was the standout voice! She truly does have this amazing sound and tone, and it wored
so well for the show, and created a great tone! She must have been the most talented when it came to vocals!!!
Another vocals pointer, don't have the cast constantly turning away from the downstage area, it loses the
strong sound!!
The supporting roles were done well. Particularly Devon Plumley and Andrew Conaghan in the role of Berger.
Both presented highly polished and stylised characterisations, with top vocals at ALL times!! Well Done!
Overall it was quite entertaining!! Well done to all involved!
P.s. - Eventainment and Yellow Glass are putting on RENT in Novemeber at the Regal! That will be one not
to miss!!
