What's It All About Dear Charles?

Dross? Certainly not!

Chastened am I, for the opening night performance of “Dear Charles” was in the main, attended by long term theatre aficionados, an audience that did not miss a line – which is a lot more than I can say for myself!

An alert lot, caught every nuance of the playwrights subtle wit and later, over chardonnay and cabernet sauvignon, expressed delight that the play had unexpectedly stood the test of time.

I had feared that the work was of another time, when “imply” was the way, rather than “in-your-face.” So I take it back and will no longer hide behind dross, for it is indeed an elegant romp through a wonderfully hedonistic lady’s past life, told with the flair of 1950s matinee sophistication.

And still there was more to learn from a knowledgeable audience. The mad, wild Polish concert pianist, Letzaresco, is no mere figment of the playwrights imagination, he is in fact a direct characterisation of the utterly obsessed, flamboyant, womanising, Hungarian pianist / composer Franz Liszt, right down to his tone poems. So in homage, the Dracula accent stays!

ItÂ’s worth outlaying coin of the realm, just to observe Karin Staflund (a true pro Â… in the nicest possible way!), carry the show Â… and the rest of us Â… in her portrayal of Denise, whilst Kym Bidstrup has Sir Michael magnificently pinned.
