OK, I have 4 of the most talented girls in town, I have an amazing director, I think I might even have a venue, now all I need is a play. But do you think I can find one? Do you??!! Noooooooooooo.

Where are all the plays with female characters that are not exclusively concerned with men, insipient lesbianism or the death of ones mother? For Gods sake this town is replete with incredibly talented women who can't get a gig. Why is no-one writing decent chick plays?

Do I have to stoop to adapting a play with male characters? Do I have to commit crimes against art and try to write one myself? Do I have to give up and face another round of auditions where forty women audition for the one female role, and when the director rings to reject you he also asks if you wouldn't mind chasing down some of your male actor mates and asking them if they'd be interested because he can't fill the male roles?

Well??!!

Hmph.

Re: Wanted; chick play.

There's actually a play with music out there called Dinkum Assorted, but it has more than 4 females, and an age range from 16 to 60. Its based in WW2 in a biscuit factory, that's all i know

Re: Wanted; chick play.

What about "Steaming'"
And hasn't Cate Smith, a local writer written a number of plays for all women casts.
Look on page 36 of the Samuel French guide, where it does list their all women plays.

Re: Wanted; chick play.

Leah Hi!

I couldnt help but respond to your email....I know exactly how you feel sister! Sooo many talented young, beautiful female artists and not enough plays! Its just another one of those situations that remind us, time and again, that we are living in a male dominated society....or are we??? Anyways, check out Hotel Sorrento by Hannie Rayson....its an Australian play about three sisters who are reunited after ten years in different worlds, yet still feel the constraints of family life. The play looks at conflicting concepts of national identity and family loyalty. You never know, you might just like it. Its an all female cast...well...errr...except for an old father figure, a young lad with pimples, and a cafe latte sipping intellectual god (or so he likes to think he is)! I know, its a hard world, you cant entirely have your cake and eat it too Leah! What do you think this is....Venus? That will be the day. As much as Id hate to admit it myself, I love men. Its a simple case of...we cant live with em and we cant live without em....so join em I say! Just make sure youre holding onto the reigns when in production!
Good Luck!

Re: Wanted; chick play.

There's a play 'Secret Bridesmaids' Business' by Elizabeth Coleman.
It has 5 females and 1 male.
Its a comedy - the night before Meg's wedding, and the bridesmaids find out the groom could be having an affair.
cheers!

Re: Wanted; chick play.

Hi, I am not sure which state you are in, but I am in the process of writing a story, "The Tangerine Cat" which i can, and in all probability will any way, turn into a script.

Briefly, it is about a lesbian couple that own and run an art gallery "The Tangerine Cat" hence the title. But things start to happen, when a customer comes in, and the one partner thinks the other is cheating on her with the (male) customer. The customer comes in more often, and the "Suspicious" partner, for want of a better description, commits suicide. Now, as it happens, the other partner (still living) has met and fallen for the customer's sister, whom also happens to be lesbian. In the end, the family tries to take the sister away, but she doesnt go. And the two get married (Yes, in this, same-sex marriages are legal, as they should be!)

CHARACTERS:

Elisabeth Daintree: One of the owners of the gallery, also the surviving partner. Required to perform a same sex kiss. Age late 20's-early 30's, physical characteristics upto the director.

Jelena Petrovic: Elisabeths partner (about the same age), and co-owner of the gallery. Also required to perform a same sex kiss. Smoker, (in story brand is Stuyvesant, but can be changed, depending on availability.)

Enzo Carrera*: Customer. Married. 30-35. Italian-looking (eg Adam Garcia), so dark hair, whether natural or artificial would be advisable.

*Possibly changing first name to something that sounds more Italian.

Briella Carrera: Enzo's younger sister. Late 20's. Required to perform one same sex kiss at the end. Innocent looking, Naive.

Carlotta: Enzo's elder sister. Married. Has been around a bit, so, not as naive as Briella.

Mother and Aunt of Enzo, Briella and Carlotta: Both middle aged, Mother slightly (5 years max) older. Aunt with 4-5 year old daughter.

Police Officers: Minor speaking roles, can be any age 18+, and male or female.

Wedding celebrant at the end: Older Male. 50-60ish.

*Gallery scenes would require paintings on walls. Office could be set on Apron Stage Left if available, if not, can be left to the director. Car scene written before thinking about it as a play. Can be in a neutral location or in the gallery before they leave.

$20 per performance. Perusal scripts available, free as soon as I have finished writing the script, which will be ASAP. Photocopying of the script okay, as it will save printer ink and paper for me.

For any info that I have left out, and/or to give me your contact details (so I can send you a copy of the script.), pls call me on 0403328830.

Cheers,

Luke

Scripts for Chicks + others

You can go to the website below and from the search page type in 4 female, 0 male and it will bring up the plays they have in their catalogue with that particular cast. The only issue is they are American plays, not Australian - I want to see more new works from Australia!!

http://www.dramatists.com

You could also e-mail the office at

www.ozscript.org

and they might know one off the top of their heads - they are wonderfully helpful!

Do I detect a not so subtle hint of Homophobia? A bit of prejudice about P.R.I.D.E. I honestly dont care if you dont like it, because your opinion doesnt matter to me.

Hi Luke. I don't read any homophobia in Dick's (ignoring the Freudian connotation here) reply - perhaps you are understandably defensive about your work?

What he expressed, although blunt and perhaps rude, was not far off my own gut reaction as I read your synopsis. Even though I know you shouldn't judge a book by its cover, it's hard not to judge a play by its synopsis...after all, that's part of its purpose: to summarise the content. So hopefully your actual script has got more potential than what I read in your synopsis, which frankly I also found a rather unappealing. The whole lesbian/suicide plot sounds kinda tabloid on the surface.

Did you notice that Leah's original post under this heading expressed the following..?

>>"Where are all the plays with female characters that are not exclusively concerned with men, insipient lesbianism or the death of ones mother?"

By all means, write about big issues. And hopefully you're good enough to move your audience, rather than remove them...

Cheers,
Craig

Nope. No homophobia at all. Your synopsis about the sad little kitten or the kid with a speech impediment or whatever it was that you posted some time ago, you know the one, sounded like one of those emails that friends with no email etiquette send from time to time, made me cringe just as much. It just sounded awful. As does this one.
Cliched, contrived soap opera pap.

Dick

ps- opinions of potential audience members don't matter to you? Good luck!
