ACTORS, SINGERS, DANCERS!
Before High School Musical, there was ...
'FAME'
the Musical
Season: May 14th-16th
It is nothing short of a global phenomenon. First came the hit motion picture, then the long-running television series. Now the screen sensation of the 1980's is the stage sensation of the 1990's and beyond! Now to be the MESHpresents 09 Youth Production, 'FAME' will be performing from the 14th to the 16th of May, showcasing the talents of Brisbane young performers aged 12-25.
Set during the last years of New York City's celebrated High School for the Performing Arts on 46th Street (1980-1984), “Fame—The Musical” is a bittersweet but ultimately inspiring story of a diverse group of students as they commit to four years of gruelling artistic and academic work. With candour, humour, and insight, the show explores the issues that confront many young people today: issues of prejudice, identity, self-worth, literacy, sexuality, substance abuse, and perseverance.
MESHpresents is an emerging not-for-profit theatrical collective, dedicated to producing quality pro-am theatre in Brisbane. In 2008, the MESH productions included its debut and first youth production of 'RENT' the Musical, the Queensland Premiere of 'tick, tick ... BOOM!' and a Christmas pantomime of 'A Little Princess'. This year, we are looking for a cast of approximately 30 talented, dedicated young actors who can sing, singers who can dance and dancers who can act to perform in MESHpresents 'Fame' 09.
Roles:
CARMEN DIAZ (Some dance preferred, mezzo soprano with high belt)
A talented dancer/singer, Carmen is sexy and full of attitude, but allows her desire for 'Fame' to lure her to the slums of L.A.
IRIS KELLY (Ballerina, no solo voice)
A well-to-do ballerina, Iris is Tyrone's love interest - that is before she tells him she doesn't want to be tied to a loser.
JOE (JOSE) VEGAS (Comic ability, tenor)
High energy, somewhat charming, with a wish to be an actor, Joe is unable to show his true self onstage.
TYRONE JACKSON (Hip-hop/breakdance/street all considered, tenor)
An amazing dancer, Tyrone has a secret that may get him kicked out of P.A.
SERENA KATZ (mezzo with a belt)
An insecure, shy actor, Serena is in love with Nick, who is oblivious.
NICK PIAZZA (tenor)
A handsome, serious actor, all Nick wants to do is 'Make Magic'.
SCHLOMO METZENBAUM (tenor)
Affable, sensitive violinist in love with Carmen.
MABEL WASHINGTON (Gospel style with a high belt)
R&B singer, plump, comic, trying to be a dancer.
MISS SHERMAN (Alto-mezzo with an optional high belt)
Traditionalist English teacher, puts academia first.
MISS BELL (Strong mezzo)
Unconventional dance teacher, puts arts first.
MR MYERS
Drama teacher, easy-going.
MR SHEINKOPF
Distinguished music teacher.
GOODMAN "GOODY" KING - jazz trumpeter (may also be required to play for the show)
GRACE "LAMBCHOPS" LAMB - a drummer, comic (may also be required to play for the show)
ENSEMBLE OF STUDENTS (All voice types)
We are looking for a large ensemble of male and female students of all voice types, who have lines and sing, and who constantly interact and grow with the others, some of whom will understudy the lead roles.
Audition details:
You only need to prepare one song that shows off your vocal range/strength and strong acting ability, preferably from musical theatre, either a'cappella or with a backing CD (DO NOT prepare anything that is from or associated with High School Musical!). If you are a ballet/contemporary/lyrical dancer, it is advisable to prepare 32 counts in addition to this, and all auditionees will learn a short, easy hiphop routine on the day (please do not be put off if you are not a "dancer", this is only to round out our evaluation). Some auditionees may be required to perform a cold read in addition to this. Please be aware that if successful you will be required to attend rehearsals on Tuesday evenings and fortnightly Saturday afternoons until the season.
Auditions will be held on Saturday the 7th and Saturday the 14th of February at Visible Ink Valley (54 Berwick Street, Fortitude Valley). Bookings are essential, these can be made any time by calling the Director on 0434 900 745.
