Amateur Theatre Capital of Oz?

Yes, this is a blatant attempt to fire up a bit of partisan discussion!

Here's an inspirational article about amateur theatre from May last year that appeared in the Melbourne Age:

I'd be happy to discuss the strengths of the article any time, but i wonder what people make of a bold claim made by Shirley Fitch of the Victorian Drama League:

"What I have found, and this has been substantiated by others, is that Melbourne is definitely the amateur theatre capital of Australia."

Perhaps the clincher is the very next sentence:

"Fitch should know. She has worked in Adelaide, Sydney, Brisbane and, of course, Melbourne."

;-)

Isn't this discussion/site poll going to be equally uninformed and/or biassed considering most active people on this site appear to be from sunny Perth?

Having said that, I do admit to feeling a little smug when eastern staters pipe up asking for opinions on their shows and they miss out on the delights that smarmy bastards like Dean and Jarrod contribute to just about every review. Somehow I don't think this would necessarily stop them from finding something lewd/suggestive/ about even the most harmless request from them easterners.

You guys rock. :-*
