Timely notice from Black Swan, given the recent discussion here of the perception of relatively few opportunities for young people:

"The program this year will include a series of workshops and a major production in September."

i wonder whether anyone at Black Swan for a moment considered a co-operative venture with the existing ITA Youth DramaFest which saw more than a half dozen performances by companies of young people in September last year. Anyone care to dash off an email or phone call to them?

"Don't miss the X-Theatre, the opportunity is out there!"

Community theatres will continue to provide opportunities for young people long after the funding for X-Theatre dries up. I should think that linking the two may prove vital.

Project director, Luke Cowling, said "This generation is certainly a product of television and the Internet and I am starting to see more of that influence in new works."

Hands up all the young people who saw the notice on Black Swan's website?

Hey, Luke! What about putting some information here where people will actually see it?

Cheers
Grant

RE: Opportunities for Young

On the subject of youthfest/dramafest, I was wondering what age classifies as "youth", (and when the cutoff is).

thanks,
Rebecca

RE: Opportunities for Young

Hi Rebecca,

DramaFest is split into two age groups, roughly corresponding to High School and Primary School.

The Senior Section caters for actors and directors 18 years down to 13 years (ie: younger than 19 years old). Of course, you can enter a play starring young actors but directed by someone older, but the director is not then eligible for any "Director's Awards".

The Junior Section caters for actors below the age of 13. Watch this site for more details.

RE: Opportunities for Young

okay,
So I'm 18 in August, and that would make me a senior in youthfest right?

I was part of harbour theatres entry last year, but would like to put my own piece in this year, and was wondering if it's posible etc, so I can start rehearsals.

Ta.

RE: Opportunities for Young

An eighteen year old can be in Youthfest (Senior Section).. You can not have had your nineteenth birthday.

Youthfest effectively gives you a year's leeway after you finish school, based on present average finishing ages in WA.

So as long as you don't turn 19 before the Youthfest, you're fine.
