Is there much Amateur Musical theatre in Perth?
Tue, 18 Nov 2003, 06:16 pmHi all
Having relocated here from the Eastern states and I'm getting frustrated as I'm itching to get back to choreography and I don't see a lot of musical theatre advertised. I also have a costume design (and hire) business mostly dealing with period and fantasy costume and I'd be happy to hire some out but there doesn't seem to be much of a market for it here.
Please tell me I'm wrong!

Hello Merri
If you use the Search Site facility you can look at past messages regards amateur musicals, auditions etc as evrything is archived.
Some of the groups specialise in musicals such as Limelight Theatre while other groups put on one or two a year such as Garrick Theatre, Strirling Players, Marloo, Acorn Theatre, Playlovers, Arena Arts, Act One Scene One, Old Mill Theatre.
And there are a lot of school productions for your costume hire. Have a look at Kerri's Dramawest site http://dramawest.iinet.net.au/index1.htm
Hope that helps
Don

Re: Amateur Musical theatre in Perth?
To further Don's comments....
I think you'll find that the musicals scene in Perth is as big and vibrant per capita as Sydney or Melbourne. The big difference is that we don't have the big musical societies like Willoughby, Regals and Rockdale in Sydney. None of the big theatre companies (except G&S) are exclusively musicals.
Having said that, Wanneroo, Playlovers, Rockingham and Stirling produce some large scale musicals...Playlovers' Grease is certainly on that "huge scale" of our Eastern counterparts.
Keep looking. They are there... Also LOTS of the Eastern Companies do two shows p/a (May/November), so you might be expecting that here in the West. As the companies all also do 'straight' plays the timetables vary considerably.
Also consider using the companies link at the top of this site and contact companies directly......Where do you live ? Start with Wanneroo if you're Northish, Playlovers if you're living closer to the city, Rockingham if you're south of Fremantle and Roleystone on the South Eastern corridor..They all do musicals and one should be close to you.
Alternatively, email me (there is a link on this post) or someone else on the ITA committee and we'll help.

Re: Amateur Musical theatre in Perth?
Thanks for that Don, much appreciated, I'll look into those. I did sort out a list of the geographically close theatres here, but didn't look too closely at who did what. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

Re: Amateur Musical theatre in Perth?
Thanks Kimberly, that's quite helpful to know. FYI I'm in Leeming. I'll get stuck into checking out those suggestions very soon.
Cheers
