need help to get an agent

hi, just wondering if anyone has any advice on getting an agent. i'm based in melbourne and want to get some work (like everybody else on the planet, hey). i've done quite a bit on stage and in different styles and i'd like to put up my hand for some professional work.
any help, advice or contacts would be most appreciated.
