Stirling Players Youth - Theatre for Teens
Wed, 16 Apr 2008, 11:53 pmMany young people come to this website looking for something other than expensive acting classes. Since 2001, Stirling Players Inc have offered a theatre group for youths - Stirlig Players Youth (or SPY to its friends). The group continues to run on the same initiative it began with – to teach young people all aspects of the theatre; from acting and performing itself, to lighting, sound, costumes, front of house and stage management. The SPY group has the advantage of working within a running theatre and, in the past, members have not only taken part in workshops that teach them about the various theatre roles; they are also given the opportunity to help out in these roles in major productions put on at Stirling. All members are encouraged to try something new, and different challenges are met each term.
SPY runs with the school term, and works toward some sort of performance – whether it be a theatre sports competition night, a short skit for the Stirling Theatre club nights or a one-act play to be entered in the state youth drama festival. Members also have the opportunity to audition for major shows at Stirling. In recent years, the club has staged youth-dominated productions; including Noah: The Musical, Narnia: the Musical and Toad of Toad Hall.
After a successful run last year which saw us perform at three Stirling club nights and take home three awards at last year's ITA drama festival, 2008 has unfortunately got off to a slow start for the SPY group. Due to other personal commitments of our regular member base - the coordinator included! - the group only completed half of the first SPY term for 2008. We are hoping to attract interest around the place and pick up a few new faces to start afresh on April 30. We already have an exciting programme planned for the upcoming term, finishing with an interactive performance for Stirling club members.
SPY is free to join. The group meets every Wednesday during the school term from 7-9pm at the Stirling Theatre (located in Morris Place, Innaloo). We will be recommencing April 30, and this will be the best time for new members to come along. Please encourage children, grandchildren, neighbours, nieces - all of the above! - to come along for a great experience.
