Corn Popping Goodness at Subi
Fri, 6 May 2005, 01:20 pmJust wanted to take this opportunity to remind everyone that Popcorn opens in less than a week.
We've got a great show. After 5 months of directing this thing I'm still finding it funny. In fact at one point I was laughing so hard that I started crying and had to leave the room. These guys are good, they really, really are.
Don't miss out, I recommend you book early and book often.
For details check out http://www.theatre.asn.au/eventView.php3?event_id=5987

Good Grief
You post something, promoting a show or whatever, go to class, visit the chiropractor, come home . . . and the damn thing has already vanished off the front page.

It's a bugger when the actors bring onions to rehearsals, isn't it?

If the home page was expanded to include more than just three posts per forum, there would be more value added to advertisements put on the site...and so possibly a reduced need from people who feel they have to post things multiple times every day. It would also be easier to keep up with the latest news, with less chance of missing a post simply because it is pushed off the page by discussion in a popular forum.
It's only the subject headers from each post, they don't take up that much room...is it too much to suggest there's room for 10 spaces in each forum rather than 3?
Cheers,
Craig

I've doubled the number of posts per forum displayed on the home page to six. Each additional post per forum has a significant impact on the size of the home page and the time taken to download the page so I'm reluctant to take it all the way to ten, but let me know what you think.
I... er... suppose there's no chance then that anyone would have been happy with my planned solution of a "recent posts" page and just a list of the ten or so most active topics for the new site?
Ah well... best laid plans and all that.
Incidentally, I can imagine after so many months and years that some people might wonder if the new site will ever arrive. It's not very far off! Work in progress available here:
http://home.it.net.au/~gmalcolm/
Don't take too much notice of the home page - I haven't added anything to it yet. But registered users here at Theatre Australia might want to try logging in to the new site using their regular name and password and updating their accounts for fun.
I have migration routines available to port everything except the news and polls across. (Sorry, Craig. The polls are probably easiest of all and I'm leaving them 'til last and "news" will work entirely differently.) There's a snapshot in there that's a few days old.
Unless you're logged in, steer away from links labelled "events", or "more" productions and "more" auditions you'll only generate an error message after a long wait. The search index is currently empty because I wipe it every time I do a fresh migration and it takes a few hours to generate.
Generally, it's probably more complete than it may appear at first glance but particularly if you log in, you'll begin to see some of the depth. If you've registered a company on the site, try logging on and clicking on the companies link in the left hand navigation.
Also, don't be put off by the empty home page and any errors you encounter - these are due to incomplete datasets. It's actually very much more solid than the current site - and solves that annoying logging you off problem!!! The rest of the features will become apparent later.
Feedback actively welcomed!
Cheers

Absolutely!
Thanks for that Grant (and thanks to Craig for suggesting it, why didn't I think of this?). It's very frustrating when you post and within 10 minutes are pushed off by a bunch of "hi I'm 13 and will do absolutely anything for a role, so call me, call me now" posts.
Hopefully this will encourage legitimate users to continue posting.
Melissa
PS Seats are still available for Popcorn, so you still have time to book . . .

Seems big enough for now. I like it. Have to wait to find out if people with slow computers have trouble with it...maybe through a poll?

Sounds like that would've been a good idea also.

Had a brief chance to look at it the other day (and met you there, Grant! The chatroom function seems greatly improved). Lots of interesting improvements to explore...unfortunately the last two times I've tried, the site's been down...work in progress, I suppose.
Anyway, looking good so far!
Cheers

Poll sounds good. Perhaps with simple more, less or fine as it is responses?

Thanks for popping by, Craig, and for the helpful feedback.
Yes, definitely work in progress. Essentially I'm wiping the slate clean a few times per night and re-importing data, so you will find it's up and down like a bride's nightie*
Do feel free to check it out, but message posts or changes to companies and events will be wiped out on a regular basis.
I will however leave member accounts intact, so if you wanted to log in with your existing Theatre Australia login and start updating your personal details, go right ahead! The details will be preserved when the site eventually goes live.
Cheers
Grant
*It's been a while but I believe I first heard Collin O'Brien use this expression. Or was that up and down like a honeymooner's bum?
Thou dankish fool-born burn-bailey!
P.S. I guess I'd better have a look at porting the insult button across or there might be a revolt.

POPCORN!
Hello Everyone!!
Just adding to Melissa's lovely reminder that Popcorn starts tomorrow night - That is Wednesday May 11.
Now you might be thinking: "I've already seen it" or "Why are they doing it again?"
Well to touch on Craig's request on a bigger space for postings, the same can some times be said of productions.
This is an all new show at an all new venue. We have new actors, we have new set pieces and the Main thing we still have is a message that is well worth hearing.
Ben Elton writes good books, witty, moralistic and informative. Popcorn is no different. That is why we have opted to do the show again. In the Studio, there was very little space for the audience to the point we couldn't fit any in in the last week. This time, we have more space both on and off stage meaning more people can see this clever piece of work and maybe learn something from it.
If you want to know more, here are some details:
Runs 11th-14th and 18th-21st May.
Subiaco Theatre Centre, Main Auditorium.
Bookings through BOCS on 9484 1133 or at www.bocsticketing.com.au
or any outlet. Booking fees apply.
Adults: $24.95
Concession: $19.95
Children (16 and younger): $14.95
MEAA: $14.95
Group bookings are available: Numbers are-
7+ : $19.95 each
20+: $19.95 + one free ticket.
